How do microbial ecosystems develop in undernourished children? The answer to this question may be the key to understanding why nutritional interventions in these vulnerable populations have failed to repair the long-term sequelae of childhood undernourishment - particularly impaired cognitive and neurodevelopment. Combining in-vivo models of normal and dysfunctional microbial succession with statistical methods inspired by graph and information theory, we are beginning to understand that underdeveloped microbiota contribute causally to the growth of children, and that targeted therapies directed toward the gut microbiota can restore aspects of a child's growth trajectory where traditional nutritional interventions have failed.

• Designing disease-specific algorithms deployed through communication technology to improve patient outcomes• Leading the clinical development, optimization, and testing of Epharmix systems targeted toward neurodegenerative, psychiatric, and CNS disorders, including dementia, epilepsy, depression, and substance use.

• Combined clinical and bench-side approaches to discover converging pathways (endolysosomal system) and previously unknown manifestations (retinal) of neurodegenerative diseases• Performed live retinal imaging on over 300 patients with neurodegenerative disease to uncover a novel correlation between hippocampal memory and retinal degeneration in healthy older adults• Helped design, implement, and test a novel pipeline to generate high quality protein-protein interactome data from human neurons in under 2 months

• Led a team of 4 UC Berkeley Bioengineers to design and build a mouse retinal imaging platform to discover novel retinal biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease• Implemented IDEO-based design process to conceive 65 design ideas• Planned 3-moth workflow (Gantt chart) and modeled/built (SolidWorks) 3 prototypes by machining custom parts and combining them with off-the-shelf pieces
