I love building & fixing things, solving problems, and working with talented people in diverse, cross-functional teams. During my time at UCSB I've been fortunate to enjoy a rich set of experiences as a researcher, teacher, administrator, and entrepreneur. As a researcher and Fellow of the IEEE I've contributed in the fields of RF electronics and electronic materials. I've been involved with the commercialization of three different technologies from research efforts to production, and my patents have been listed among the top revenue-generating inventions in the UC. I founded a venture-backed company, have been an active advisor and investor in others, and oversaw the Entrepreneurship program at UCSB for several years. I've participated on a variety of faculty governance committees, and led the creation of a new Academic Unit on campus (the Technology Management Program in the College of Engineering). I was Director/Chair of this program for seven years during which we created two new degree programs, including a PhD and UCSB's first fee-bearing professional Masters degree. I was responsible for hiring all the faculty and staff in this new department, as well as fundraising activities which yielded over $3M in gifts, including two endowed chairs. In 2017 I became the Dean of Professional & Continuing Education at UCSB, and in collaboration with the outstanding team of dedicated professionals there we were able to double the revenue during my tenure.As an academic I love the complementarity of teaching and research and the continuous learning and knowledge creation that results when those two things are done well. As a teacher and researcher I'm an increasingly humbled lifelong student of classical electromagnetics. As an administrator and student of management I'm a strong proponent of flat, learning organizations that recognize the need for continuous innovation, and teams that also can embrace failures as learning experiences.
