• Project seeks to develop an advanced reduction process (ARP) to remove Chromium(VI) from California groundwater system through the use of sulfite and low-pressure UV radiation at 254nm; involved reactive species are sulfite radical (SO3•-), hydrogen atom (H•), and hydrated electron (eaq-).• Project will determine the influence of water chemistry on the reactions involved in the process, which will enable the design of effective strategies for the minimization of Chromium(VI) for a broad range of drinking water sources.• Research will ultimately provide guidance to water utilities on the design and optimization of Hexavalent Chromium removal, in adherence to a proposed “low drinking water standard for Chromium(VI) that requires California water systems to upgrade water treatment methods to remove Chromium(VI).
