About Robert Zinke

I am a multidisciplinary Earth scientist working in earthquake and natural hazards science who enjoys creative problem solving and teaching. I am always on the lookout for new ways to apply my skills in geology, geodesy, and geomorphology in education and research.I use both remote sensing and field-based methods in my work. At JPL, I use satellite radar data (InSAR) and optical imagery to study tectonic deformation, earthquake behavior, and climate-soil interactions. My work involves Big Data processing, geo-spatial analysis, and critical thinking to formulate project ideas. I am motivated by big-picture ideas and high-level problem solving.Throughout my doctorate at the University of Southern California I studied active earthquake faults and fault networks to characterize patterns of fault behavior across time and space. In my studies, I drew on a diverse skill set, incorporating paleoseismic trenching, tectonic geomorphology, remote sensing, and multiple geochronologic dating methods to understand fault behavior on timescales of one to tens of earthquake cycles.I worked at ConocoPhillips from June 2012 through July 2013 as a writer and editor of geoscience content for their corporate knowledge database. This job necessitated interdisciplinary communication skills, a strong writing background, and the ability to create user-friendly online content.I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2012, where I gained research and classroom experience in geology and Earth sciences. My research project focused on the storage conditions and eruption dynamics of obsidian lavas.

    Research Scientist
Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory Jul 2021 - Present

I develop and implement remote sensing workflows to increase our collective knowledge of Earth phenomena. Specifically, I use spaceborne and airborne optical and radar sensors to image the ground surface at spatial resolutions of centimeters to hundreds of meters. I apply and develop algorithms for change detection, to resolve cm-scale surface displacements, which I use to investigate the physical processes governing the Earth's soil active layer, crust, and upper mantle. My favorite applications of these remote sensing methods are to tectonics and earthquake studies, in which I am trained as a field geologist.
