Networkng with colleagues on campus and in other universities as well artists and organizations in the Greater Metropolitan Atlanta area, the Southeast, and nationally was an important aspect of my professional life and enabled me to borrow works of art for exhibitions that introduced the university and the Atlanta area to many artists, historic styles and new directions in art. I initiated the annual "The Year of..." with two other professors in 1985, and this study of a particular country or area of the world every year provided the campus and the community an opportunity to expand their understanding of the world --through credit classes, public lectures, the performing arts, and a major museum quality exhibition that presented art of the selected country. "The Year of...Study Series" continues to contribute to Kennesaw State University's international focus and has become a model for other colleges and universities.I obtained over $4 million in donated art over the years from generous collectors, including the archives and work of two nationally recognized Atlanta artists, Athos Meneboni and Ruth Zuckerman. I was instrumental in raising $4 million for a museum and working with architects in long-term planning for galleries and support spaces. The Russell Clayton Gallery opened in 2007, and the Bernard Zuckerman Museum will open in spring 2014. Show less

The second required course allowed students to select one of those areas to study in more depth. The art gallery was an important component of their learning, and the administration generously funded my efforts to curate exhibitions of nationally noted American artists and those from other countries, especially Latin America. The gallery also presented a highly competitive spring art exhibition of student work.Grant-writing was a significant aspect of my job to support arts related programming after I was appointed as chair of the department. I obtained the notable Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. Collection of Decorative and Propaganda Art with substantial yearly funding for exhibitions, cataloging and restoration, planned gallery spaces with architects, and oversaw the opening of the inaugural exhibition in 1983.I served on the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places Committee for three years and was Chair of the Airport Committee in 1982-83, as well as working with The New World Festival of the Arts to relate arts programming at the New World Center Campus to their schedule of presentations.
