About Roberta Mcclellan

It was 25 years ago that I decided to focus my management and marketing experience on the nonprofit arts industry. It is a choice I have never regretted. The work is rewarding, creative and exciting. It reaches well beyond a career to that of a passion and way of life. The challenges are many for nonprofit arts organizations--now more than ever. Our country, our world, is going through a huge transition which creates new challenges for both the performing and visual arts. Arts institutions must adapt or be left behind. From a presentation point of view as well as in outreach, nonprofits must find their voice, their audience, their core strengths and move it forward to support their communities. And this must be done in ways that are inclusive and culturally relevant. In addition to the ongoing societal challenges which are impacting how and what we present, we are also experiencing shifts in fundraising techniques, acceptable and innovative programming, support resources. Now, more than ever, it's important to have strong leadership in place, and a team that can support and anticipate the next steps. This is what a solid management team can do for an organization--large or small. These are difficult times--like no other in our history. But with continued support and the belief that we can make it through together--art will prevail. Collaboration, cultural equity and creativity are vital now, more than ever. And that is what we in the arts are truly great at--bring on the challenges--we're up for it. Onward!

Listed skills include Fundraising, Community Outreach, Non Profits, Research, and 33 others.

Working in the visual arts is incredibly rewarding and challenging. Viewpoint Photographic Art Center is the only non-profit of its type in the region. We offer an incredible gallery program (located at J and 20th in heart of midtown), workshops, field trips, lectures and much more. We are working hard to bring the art of photography to the forefront of the visual arts world and to develop new community outreach opportunities and educational programs. We are working hard to bring the art of photography to the forefront of the visual arts world and to develop new community outreach opportunities and educational programs. The organization is largely volunteer run, supported not only by very talented people, but also some of the kindest and most sincere people I've ever had the pleasure to work with. As I continue my management services as the Executive Director at Viewpoint, I see an unlimited future for this organization--so much is changing in the world of photography, but also, so much remains the same. It is an exciting and ever-changing art form. I will continue to work closely with the Board of Directors to define and solidify the infrastructure, develop ongoing lines of communication to get the Viewpoint message heard, and to bring new and exciting exhibits to our gallery program. We also continue to seek new community partnerships, sponsorships and support. So please, drop me a line if you'd like to support Viewpoint and all its incredible programs! Show less

I've also been fortunate enough to work with some amazingly creative communications professionals over the years providing a solid base of talent to pull from when developing the right team for a contract or project. HOW ITS DONE: Most of the non-profit projects I work on are long-term contracts which require going in on a deep level and integrating with the organization on a daily basis. Contracts may run from six months to many years. Contracts generally include full organizational management but others maybe project based focusing on marketing, fundraising or program development. I look forward to talking with you about the vision for your nonprofit. I prefer a more personal approach, so please drop me a line at roberta@mmgsite.com to discuss your needs. During my tenure at the Camellia Symphony Orchestra (CSO) I assisted in the redevelopment of the entire operation from the infrastructure to concert programming, and community outreach. I was also able to increase the season subscriber base from a low of 178 to over 500 at the time of my departure through marketing and public relations efforts. Single ticket sales also grew and stabilized providing CSO with a loyal following of patrons (all during the Great Recession!). It was an exciting time to run a volunteer orchestra in a community that presented many challenges to a classical music organization. Arts institutions all have their cycles of expansion and retraction—new music directors, new management—an ebb and flow. After eleven years of growing and guiding CSO, it was time to take my skills to new levels and new institutions. The Camellia Symphony will always be one of my favorite groups to have worked with—what an incredible group of volunteer musicians and Board Members. Show less

The work was demanding, intense and highly public. I worked closely with elected officials, commissioners, staff and volunteers. I began working with SMAC as an independent contractor supporting their various marketing, public relations and event planning needs. Following this one-year period, I applied for, and won, a very competitive multi-year RFP contract to develop a public awareness program for Sacramento arts. It was an exciting contract and our team of professionals garnered a great deal of attention and support. The team consisted of a very talented local graphic designer, Missy Anapolsky of Circle Design, myself as the project architect, media buyer and copywriter, and past SMAC executive director, Rhyena Halpern as the director providing the focus and goals. Together, we created an impactful and far reaching public service campaign that ran for over 3 years. The campaign was entitled: ARTS. Open Daily. It was simple, powerful and all-inclusive. We utilized images from local arts organizations to keep the campaign fresh and real. These images were alternated on a quarterly bases so we could represent as many of the arts organizations as possible. Through the media buys I developed, I was able to receive more than $150,000 in donated media over a three-year period of time which helped expand and sustain the campaign during challenging financial times. It is a campaign and a period of professional growth I will always be proud of. Hats off to all the great work being done by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. Show less
