About Roberta Mendonça De Carvalho
I am faculty at the Urban Studies Program of the University of Pittsburgh and affiliated faculty at the Center for Latin American Studies. I am an urban geographer guided by critical and decolonizing approaches applied to teaching and research. Classes taught: * Introduction to Urban Studies International Urbanism (emphasis in Latin America)* Latin America Geography* Urban Economic Geography* Urban Business Geography* Urban Sustainability GIS, and Community Data* Urban Research Seminar ("Glocalization")* The Amazon.In terms of research, my focus has been on urbanization processes and impacts, mostly by investigating how urbanization has changed the Brazilian Amazon. I advocate for the topic’s relevance in understanding the forest context (80% urban population). The socio-spatial changes derived from urbanization jeopardize sustainability if not accounted for. Further research topics: urban forest, ecosystem services, land use/cover changes, and urban sustainability. Methods: GIS, remote sensing, quantitative and qualitative.
