I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Actuarial Science from the City University of New York-Baruch College. When I mention to people that I want to be an actuary, they think I am crazy for wanting to have a mathematics-related career, especially something as complex as actuarial mathematics. But as Lewis Carol wrote in Alice in Wonderland, “You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret all the best people are.” Why should I let what people say discourage me from what I love doing if I am good at it and enjoy what I am doing? I always loved mathematics growing up, and my studies at Baruch along with exposure to actuarial concepts through a CAS Summer Program have made me love math and actuarial concepts even more. I like to believe that if you love something and have a passion for it, you need to put your mind into it, work hard to achieve all of your wildest dreams, be the best you can be, and your hard work will pay off down the line.Besides having a passion for math, I love helping others and giving back to the community. A smile on people's faces when I help them in any way signifies that I have done something right, and knowing I have done the right thing when helping others is a feeling words cannot describe. In middle school and throughout high school, I volunteered at a local senior center. At Baruch College, I held different positions in the Undergraduate Student Government, such as Board of Directors student representative, Vice Presidential Senator of Campus Affairs, and Chair of Philanthropy, which all gave me the opportunity to give back to my peers and help improve students' experiences at Baruch. Also, I was a Peer Mentor for the Baruch Actuarial Science Society and for T.E.A.M Baruch.
