Mr. Appleton is the first UN official to introduce the authority and ability to investigate vendors who enter into contracts with the UN to provide goods and services to the Organization, an effort that is continued to present day. Mr. Appleton's investigations led to the sanction and debarment of 47 companies. Mr. Appleton served as the northeast region's coordinator for the DOJ for all export control and international trade and weapons investigations and prosecutions between 1995 and 2005, and tried many high profile weapons cases, including diversions of weapons technology to Iran, Iraq, China and North Korea. Mr. Appleton was selected as Branch Chief of the Bridgeport branch office of the Connecticut US Attorneys Office in 2003, and served in that position, supervising the office's 15 civil and criminal prosecutors until his departure in May, 2005. Mr. Appleton received countless awards from the DOJ, the FBI, Customs, Commerce, Homeland Security, the DEA and the ATF for his performance, and in 2004 received the highly coveted Director's Award, the 2nd highest award in the Department of Justice and awarded by the Attorney General for his performance in high profile racketeering, drug gang and murder prosecutions, including a case that had been lost in state court.
