Northern Maine in the early 2000s. Cold. Desolate. Impossible to find a box set of Bill Nye, the Science Guy. With this level of scarcity, I cherished anything related to science that I could get my hands on. Fortunately for me, cable in the 2000s included the robot battle show, Robot Wars. In my eyes, controlling one of these battle bots would have been cooler than Maine itself. Now, with years of experience working with autonomy and control, I think it is safe to say that kid is finally living his dream.As a Robotics Engineer, I play a key role in solving the wide array of questions brought to the table when designing an autonomous robot. I have worked on solutions for each core aspect of autonomy which include Localization, Perception, Planning, and Control. Additionally, I play a part in design and integration of system architecture such as Mission Control Units, Digital Twin Simulation and On-Vehicle Software Deployment. My current work at Neya focuses on off-road, ground vehicle deployment of autonomous systems which brings a range of new issues to the playing field. The complexity added by off-road environments, such as GPS-denied systems, difficult to traverse terrain and poor perceptive feedback, only make coming up with a working solution feel that much better.
