About Robert A. (Bob) Baumann

I am the son of a carpenter. I was given my first hammer and hand saw before the age of ten. My Dad and I built a two-story, 1000 sq. ft. addition onto our house during the summer of my 12th year. These early experiences helped set a direction for me towards a career in the construction industry. I interned and co-oped with a land surveyor, a construction manager and a general contractor. My undergraduate and graduate work at The University of Cincinnati specialized in structures and their design. I started my structural design career with Lantz Jones Nebraska in December of 1981.I worked with the senior partners and developed my skills as a design engineer, a project engineer and then as a project manager. I have been a registered Professional Engineer since 1984. I have been a principal with the firm since 1998. The company changed its name to Shelley Metz Baumann Hawk in 2005 and we became SMBH, Inc. in 2013.

    After 15,551 days (43 years) I have retired from a lifetime of structural engineering. I worked my entire career at a great company, SMBH, Inc., formerly Shelley Metz Baumann Hawk formerly Lantz Jones Nebraska. I loved what I did and I loved all the wonderful people that I was privileged to collaborate with. SMBH is filled with highly skilled individuals and I can't wait to see all the fantastic structures that they design in the future.
