About Robert Powers

I hear sometimes that LGBTQ+ students want to be treated just like everyone else. This is definitely not true! LGBTQ+ teens have their own unique, individual considerations in the college search, and they're all in different places in their personal journeys. The right guidance can be the difference between these young people finding safe, happy, supportive campuses, or finding... something else.I'm an independent college counselor who helps families one-on-one through the college process. I'm also an advocate for students through my advocacy organization IECs for Human Rights and my specialized college access organization Campus Q, which provides free information to students and their college counselors about the unique college search for LGBTQ+ students. At College Torch, my college counseling firm, over 50% of my students identify as non-straight. I guide them through the college search process by listening closely to their needs, preferences, goals, and circumstances, and matching them to their best colleges. In the application process, I help students confidently carve a direct path through college application season with clear tasks and timelines. At the same time, I empower every student to tell their application stories authentically in their own individual voices.I love helping my students turn college chaos into college calm. Students who work with me are not stress-free (they certainly have lots on their plates) but they are able to rest easy knowing they have an expert in their corner to guide them through the college process and help them with whatever comes up.Not all of my students identify as LGBTQ+. Students will be a good fit to work with me if they are open-minded and share my values.Outside of my practice, I am the cofounder of IECs for Human Rights, the only grassroots advocacy organization for IECs.
