In addition to my everyday children’s librarian duties—collection development, readers’ advisory, reference, and preschool story times—I teach STEM classes at the library. In 2014, I applied for and received an LSTA "Science is Everywhere" federal grant. Funds were used for the purchase of LEGO Education sets to teach science workshops.Workshops currently being conducted for 2nd-6th graders include: 1) WeDo engineering and beginning programming for 2nd and 3rd graders. Using LEGO Education kits and laptop computers, students are introduced to basic STEM concepts, such as simple machines, gearing, electromagnetism, programming logic, and the application of these concepts in real-world analogs. An introduction to scientists such as Isaac Newton and Michael Faraday is included. 2) LEGO EV3 competitions for 4th-6th graders— advanced computer programming concepts used in designing autonomous robots. Students build robots to compete in battlebots and line-following tournaments. 3) Developed and taught other non-LEGO STEM programs, including stop-motion animation zoetropes and pneumatic JudoBots.Presenter at Mass STEM Summit for "STEM in Libraries," November 2015.Designed and built electronic games to be used in the Summer Reading program.
