IT Manager of an independent business unit of about 70 people working in the area of air quality, with one assistant and a web developer. Part of the ERG management team, making decisions about business direction, financial planning and staff. Responsible for all IT services including Security (Firewall with VPN), file and print, databases, web pages, email, a Geographic Information System and automatic remote data collection. Customer contact and negotiation about external IT projects. Developed plans that have seen most services improved or migrated, especially during a site move with less than 1 hour of interruption. Improved reliability by creating live mirror systems, and then by the recent creation of a SAN and a virtualisation system with live failover. Development of special tools for our business, allowing one section to go paperless and hugely improving the efficiency of another. Development of innovative websites, including our highly regarded Londonair website, including functions like the nowcast, a data recording website for the construction industry commissions by the GLA, an air quality forecast alerting website, an API that allows external users and systems to access our data, and one that dynamically creates spreadsheets to adjust instrument measurements.

Project Manager : January 2000 – September 2000In addition to existing software engineering duties, I was responsible for managing the six person unit, with projects overlapping. This involved planning projects to deadlines and assigning tasks within the group. I also negotiated with third parties for access to data, and for help with funding bids.Software Engineer: August 95 – December 99I was responsible for computing systems to collect, distribute and analyse computer medical records from general practices in Scotland. I used disk-copying machines to import practice data and automated feedback production, freeing 2 members of staff for other projects. I also implemented a common software interface to double the effectiveness of our software production, and created a disk logging system which allow us to spot persistent problems from practices.

I cycled from Aberdeen to Cairo with a tent on my own, travelling approximately 7000 miles. Thisinvolved coping with a limited budget, physical challenges, mechanical problems and different cultures.

The system was well received.
