Operations SupervisorThe Mosaic Company Dec 2012 - Jul 2014Tampa, Florida, UsDaily, I managed a team of 10+ operators along with multiple maintenance personnel within the dry-products plants at the Mosaic, Bartow concentrates facility. The plants we operated were both revolutionary in product (sulfur and zinc-enriched MAP) and massive in size (the worlds largest single-train DAP plant). We handled, through an expansive network of tanks, pipes and valves, anhydrous ammonia, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, uric acid, molten sulfur, and steam. It was my responsibility to first maintain a safe work space and all environmental standards (first responder and HAZMAT trained), but also to create work orders, green tag them, coordinate with maintenance to achieve the repairs with as little downtime as possible, and maximize production while also maintaining product quality standards. I coordinated with management and supervisors of adjacent plants to ensure the on-time delivery of raw materials and the proper placement of finished product. I conducted safety audits and inspections of plant machinery (elevators and conveyors, pulverizers, cooling towers and chillers, granulators and dryers), as well as confined space entry permitting, lockout-tag-out, and other work permits. I was responsible for supervising plant down days that included a full wash inside and out of all plant equipment - 20+ operators, water blasting crews, outside maint contractors. This role is a rotating shift requiring a smooth transition of info to/from incoming supervisors and crews morning and night, weekdays and weekends. I developed shift supervisor reports to consolidate and clarify the information exchange in as efficient a way as possible. I personally developed an automated raw materials inventory system to mitigate downtime due to material shortages - a manual count would take place monthly, but using the plants data management system, I was able to create and algorithm that could track the number of pallets of material used in a shift without conducting a manual count. -
Continuous Improvement EngineerThe Mosaic Company Oct 2011 - Dec 2012Tampa, Florida, UsWhile working with the continuous improvement department under the name ROIC Works! (Return on Invested Capital), and working with site teams comprised of management personnel (maintenance and operations), hourly staff, and mining, process and reliability engineers, we used Six Sigma methods and tools for finding the bottlenecks in our manufacturing plants, eliminated or reduced them, and worked to record levels of production across multiple sites. We utilized lean manufacturing and lean management ideas from the Toyota Production System to develop and implement (with the help of hourly staff) visual management boards in all control and meeting rooms. We standardized work from new SOP's in the plants to leader standard work for all management personnel. I personally translated 2D drawings of the dredges into 3D CAD models to help visualize the operation that takes place 50-120 ft below the highly turbid water's surface. I researched and reported on different SONAR technologies that might be able to give instant operational feedback - of which a solution was found and implemented. I conducted fracture analysis on spud failures that not only caused significant downtime for mining operations, but also significant repair expenses. In order to mitigate catastrophic failures, I coordinated with outside engineering teams to implement strain gauges to monitor stresses present in the spuds during normal operations and give operators feedback. -

Lead CarpenterJohnsen Amphibious Marine Construction, Inc May 2005 - Jan 2006This was my first construction job after a lifetime of learning carpentry skills from my master-carpenter-father. I was immediately moved from apprentice to carpenter, and from there to the lead role with my own barge and crew. The barge utilized a hydraulic-powered, mechanical drill and small crane arm for setting pilings. We also used water jetting techniques where feasible.
