  • Texas Instruments Incorporated
    Sr Systems Engineer (Smts)
Texas Instruments Incorporated Dec 2000 - Jun 2017
    Dallas, Tx, Us
TI is a large company with many divisions and product groups. My entire career at TI was with the group that is currently called "Education Technology". This group is responsible for hardware and software solutions to meet the needs of math and science educators. This group is most well known for its line of TI-83 and TI-84 graphing calculators.I was hired (as a contractor) in late 2000 as a Perl (mod_perl) programmer to work on a web-based educational product. In the two weeks between accepting the position and starting work TI had switch strategies and would now be using Java. I studied Java extensively during the time I had and arrived prepared for the challenge. After 11 months, TI again changed strategies and canceled the project I was working on. They let all of the other contractors go but offered me a full-time job. I joined TI as an employee in October of 2001. The change in strategy at this time was a move away from web-based solutions to a pure desktop product built in Java Swing. From that point through 2008 I spent a majority of my time as the lead engineer for TI-Navigator. This is a classroom networking product including both hardware and software to allow the teacher to collaborate with students using TI graphing calculators over a wireless network. I worked extensively on all parts of the system. From debugging wireless traffic, designing proprietary network protocols, building large Java Swing user interfaces, to writing a custom implementation of the JAXB XML parsing library.Starting in 2008 I focused on future products rather than current. I was tasked with defining the technical evolution of our software products. Making decisions about which technologies for desktop and embedded software should be used in future projects.I was recognized by the TI Technical Ladder as Senior Member Technical Staff (top 6% of technical contributors in the company).
  • Physia
    Senior Software Engineer
    Physia Apr 2000 - Dec 2000
Physia was an Internet startup to provide online patient records and automated insurance filings for physicians. I was hired as one of the first developers and helped setup both the software framework and IT infrastructure. We used Perl, Apache, and Oracle to build a web based solution for doctors. I acted as a technical leader to the new developers that we're hired and maintained most of the IT infrastructure including Solaris and Linux servers, Oracle databases, and an early IP phone system. This startup lost funding and did not survive the 2001 bubble. I left shortly before this happened. One of the founders, Shahid Shah, still maintains a blog on the company's web site.

This job was a unix support battlefield as hotel front desk staff would regularly power off unix servers and corrupt hard drives (in the days before journaling filesystems). We recovered 2-6 completely failed systems every day. I became an expert at unix filesystem operations and SysV init troubleshooting.I also developed and improved several software applications to make the process of supporting hundreds of remote unix systems easier. Many of these systems were only accessible through dial-up modems or sometimes telnet over Marriott's WAN.
