American conductor Robert Debbaut has led orchestras throughout North America and in Asia and Europe including guest conducting Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic, Cleveland Symphony Youth Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Filharmonia Sudecka, Hartford Symphony, Kharkiv Philharmonic, Milwaukee Symphony, North Bohemian Philharmonic, Great Novgorod Philharmonic, Saint Petersburg Classic Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory Orchestra, Utah Opera, Utah Symphony, Yaroslavl Symphony Orchestra among others including the National Symphony of Guatemala where he has been a frequent guest conductor over the past two decades. Dr. Debbaut holds the degree Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan where he was the first American conductor to be Wu Fellow in Conducting. Further studies took him to the Estonia’s David Oistrakh Music Festival, the Oregon Bach Festival, International Conductors Workshop in Prague and the Tanglewood Music Center where he was a selected conductor in Yo-Yo Ma's Cello Master Class and among Leonard Bernstein's last students. His teachers and mentors have included Maurice Abravanel, Neeme Järvi, Gustav Meier, and Helmuth Rilling.Dr. Debbaut served as Director of Orchestras at the University of Utah from 1990 to 1998. His orchestras were twice honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for the programming of new American music and won Down Beat magazine's student music award for best classical orchestral performance three times in four years. In addition to his position at Utah, he has held positions as Visiting Conductor at the University of Minnesota, Lawrence Conservatory, DePaul University, the University of Akron and the Guatemalan National Conservatory of Music.
