In 2011 he was awarded a Scholarship to study medicine at the Malaysia's Monash University. He later received a John Murtagh First Wave Medical Scholarship. In 2014 he was selected to undertake a research Honours Degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan. He was bestowed the Harry Hindlip-Green Prize for Medicine in his graduating cohort. Dr. Gillies then completed his specialist psychiatry training over a five-year period at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Since graduating as a psychiatrist, Dr. Gillies has practiced at The Melbourne Clinic (in Richmond, Victoria). In this role, Dr. Gillies provides hospital-based psychiatric care and runs The Evallies Clinic. Dr. Gillies has maintained several extracurricular interests over the years. He has worked as a Lecturer of Medicine and Psychiatry at Monash University and has been a guest speaker at medical conferences. He has also produced educational content as a host on science podcasts, published original research in peer-reviewed journals, and presented his research at academic meetings. Outside of academic, Dr. Gillies has contributed to several community groups. He has played the Double Bass with the Australian Doctors Orchestra, sport with local amateur clubs, and volunteered for different charities.
