I've wound up back where I began, with my old pals at Deepwater after having followed the siren song of journalism once again to its expected disastrous conclusion (layoffs). Happy to resume marketing Deepwater's corrosion-preventing I-Rod® pipe supports, Polatrak® CP probes and monitoring tools, retrofit anode systems, corrosion lab services and everything else dealing with offshore cathodic protection.

I was the graphics coordinator for the graphics team at GateHouse Media’s Center for News and Design in Austin, Texas, where we provided information graphics and page design for GateHouse (now Gannett) - the nation’s largest newspaper chain - and also for commercial clients.

Deepwater provides corrosion control systems for gigantic offshore steel structures that could otherwise rust, collapse and crumble to the sea floor. For them, I designed advertisements, brochures, graphics, product manuals, trade show booth displays, shot product photos and events, shot and edited instructional and promotional videos, wrote and edited press releases, and booked – and occasionally participated in – trade shows. I also made updates to the company's website.

I taught Informational Graphics at Missouri's School of Journalism and also acted as Graphics Director of the Missourian, the student-staffed, city-wide daily newspaper / web site that serves as the journalism school's lab.

The Creative Group provides design professionals (that's me) to businesses who need artists but would rather not hire them. My contract gigs included Igloo Products Corp., OneSource Security, Baker Botts and Whole Wheat Creative.

Created informational graphics to augment both the written stories and visual presentation of the paper. Graphics were of all types, including step-by-step descriptions, timelines, cutaways, maps and charts. Mostly generated using Illustrator, Freehand, Photoshop and just a teensy bit of LightWave. A bunch were hand-drawn using watercolor, acrylics, pen and ink or gouache, scanned in and then labeled. In addition, I did a steady stream of illustrations, caricatures and the occasional comic strip, including the almost-weekly Snailman strip which ran exclusively in the Chronicle in the mid-1990s.

I cut my teeth doing a little cartooning and a lot of paste-up at this small silkscreen-based print shop. They manufactured and printed supplies for cheerleaders and golfers, such as golf daily badges, golf bag tags and parking tags. The owner had invented the Spirit Ribbon, a little strip of ribbon with a cartoon and slogan like 'Bomb the Bears' that cheerleaders could sell to raise funds. Everyone should start out with a job like this; it makes you really appreciate every other gig you'll ever have.
