When I walked away from my stable job at HSBC in 2016, everyone told me I was a bit mad. Maybe I was… but you have to be a bit mad to take a gamble on yourself and start a business. It was a massive risk - the biggest of my career - but I was no stranger to risk. It’s why HSBC hired me in the first place! I had a wealth of risk management experience from serving nearly a decade in the military and was surprised at how applicable those skills were to the private sector. As I worked to create financial crime risk management processes, it quickly became clear which skill was the most essential: I know how bad people think, so I know how to stop them. This expertise, alongside my passion for preventing and exposing financial crime, set the foundation for the creation of my own business: FINTRAIL. While it was admittedly difficult, those early days of FINTRAIL had a certain magic about them. We were a startup that liked to work with other startups. We ‘got’ the vibe and the culture, and were totally empathetic to the pains that these other small companies were going through because we were going through them ourselves. FINTRAIL became representative of that ethos - we understood where creators were coming from and related to them. We’ve kept that ethos constant as we’ve grown the business. Now I’m proud to say that the gamble we took on ourselves ultimately paid off!We’ve built a global team of consultants with a wide range of experience: from those who have worked at massive global financial institutions, to law enforcement and criminology specialists, all the way to those who have worked at FinTech startups and global scale-ups.
