Profile bio

About Robert Gardner

Typically I have been engaged in activities where innovative technological change is one of the key ingredients. At Scottish Futures Trust, I am part of a team whose role is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of future digital infrastructure investment by the government through working collaboratively with public bodies and industry. This involves trying to predict the future digital connectivity landscape, which, in all likelihood, satellite communications technologies are going to play an ever stronger role.In my previous role within the rail industry, I was recognized for promoting and then delivering the vital move to modern optical IP transmission systems, which was challenging at times in a (probably rightly) conservative industry that holds an excellent safety record in recent times. In my "copious spare time", I still work alongside Amey Consulting colleagues on a large and exciting rail project in South Wales, plus have worked with Siemens on telecoms aspects of the UK's High-Speed 2 project. In summary, I am a Chartered Engineer and Doctor of Philosophy with over 20 years’ experience in the data communications field, and have been involved in the inception, design, specification and delivery of a variety of business-critical communications systems and technologies, with growing knowledge of satellite communications systems and specialist knowledge in MPLS/IP/Ethernet design in a mission-critical environment.Specialties: Application of Satellite Communications technologies, Mission-Critical Wireless Communications, Sensor IoT Systems, Transmission Networks, MPLS/IP/Ethernet Networking and Design, L2 and L3VPN Data Services, Voice-over-IP, IPv6, Railway Telecommunications, IP Measurement Technology, Network Programming, SQL Databases, Python/C/C++/VB Computer Programming.

Listed skills include Telecommunications, Engineering, Transmission, Testing, and 14 others.
