Established Virtual Psychiatric/SUD IOP services (all ages) across the Sutter system. Expanded Sutter's Tele-psychiatry network to 17 ED's/hospital medical floors while doubling the consultation volume. Responsible for outstanding continuum of Addiction and Recovery services in Southern California. Successfully completed a turnaround of these services, with many complex challenges including regulatory, quality & safety, rebranding, growth and profitability. Subsequent to my directed turnaround Laguna Treatment Hospital has been recognized for the last 4 years by Newsweek as one of America’s Best Addiction Treatment Centers.

As Regional V.P. I was responsible for a region of BH hospitals including both psychiatric and addictions services ranging in location from Boston to California. While at Signature I maintained a strong development focus opening 2 new 120+bed BH hospitals, while turning around/expanding other existing operations. In addition, I provided support and oversight for an additional 180 new BH beds targeted for completion in 2018.

Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) is one of the nation's largest health care organizations, serving over 43 million patient encounters each year. In addition to supporting the area's 14 medical centers, as the Regional V.P. I led a network of 9 Behavioral Health service locations, including Psychiatric and Addictions inpatient services, PHP/IOP, Tele-Psych, ECT, and traditional BH Outpatient services. During my 7+ years at HCA I was a top producer nationally in year-over-year growth in volume and profit, including opening 5 new BH inpatient locations and expanding existing beds/services. As a result I increased inpatient admissions by 100%, and grew Outpatient service locations from 2 to 14. As BH services within the region lacked coordination when I began, I developed a series of innovative initiatives that included summits of key leaders from top clinical and administrative posts in both medicine and BH; having at last a single, strategic vision for BH. These summits resulted in significant capital project approvals to expand BH services, initiatives to reduce BH insurance denials by 50%, and BH patient safety/quality improvements for both BH and Medicine.My team also revolutionized HCA East Florida's BH evaluation and placement system by creating a centralized Regional Assessment and Referral Center. Relying upon telemedicine technology, HCA ED BH patients were quickly assessed by offsite professionals, with a 40% reduction in ED wait times and 60% decrease in outmigration. The centralized BH assessment triage center was replicated as a best practice across the entire HCA enterprise.To ensure high performance across a large complex organization, we developed quality & operational dashboards to more effectively manage everything from patient satisfaction and readmissions to quality core measures and patient safety. These dashboards were proliferated across HCA as a best practice.

Psychiatric Solutions (now Universal Health Services, Inc.) provided Psychiatric and Addictions inpatient, residential treatment, and outpatient services across three operations in Broward County. As its CEO, I led this $50M/year organization to post 40% EBITDA growth; this success was due in part to the renegotiation of major managed care organization contracts, which resulted in 20% rate increases with two of the largest MCOs in the region. Focused on cutting costs as well as growing revenues, I also developed a creative restructuring of operational expenses and reduced per patient day costs by 10%.

Responsible for the behavioral health service line across all eight medical centers within the Lutheran Health Network (now owned by Community Health Systems), over my seven years with the organization, I transformed both inpatient admissions as well as outpatient services, growing the former by 87% and the latter by 145%.I also redefined the role of behavioral health within the organization, providing a system of consultation and support to provide the network's hospitals, emergency departments, and medical floors with behavioral health subject-matter expertise, assessment, and treatment.
