Conducting a survey of expert opinions on agro-ecology transitions (AET) in Southeast Asian countries. This research was undertaken on behalf of the World Vegetable Centre (WorldVeg) as part of a “Scoping study of priorities for R&D actions on agro-ecology for climate-resilient and nourishing food systems in Southeast Asia.” The objectives of this research was to gather and assess the opinions of a range of scientists, policy makers, practitioners and other people with diverse expertise in agroecology (AE) and related fields in Southeast Asian countries to answer the questions:1. What is the current status or progress of agroecology / sustainable agriculture transition in the major agricultural producing countries in Southeast Asia?2. What are the major constraints and knowledge gaps which are preventing large scale agro-ecology / sustainable agriculture transition in Southeast Asian countries?3. What the key/priority areas for research and development to support agro-ecology / sustainable Agriculture transitions in Southeast Asian countries?4. What research partnerships arrangements and what types of collaborative research approaches would be most beneficial to support agro-ecology / sustainable agriculture transitions in Southeast Asian countries?The methodology applied included: 1. A detailed review of recent scientific and policy advocacy literature relating to agro-ecology in Southeast Asia;2. Developing a framework of analysis for evaluating progress towards agro-ecological transitions; 3. I have been collecting Melanesian and Southeast Asian art since the 1990s. In 2010 established TIFA with the aim of promoting fair-trade in indigenous Melanesian and Southeast Asian art. Activities undertaken include:2019: Bali International Indigenous Film Festival - Liaison with directors and performers, fundraising, organizing an indigenous art exhibition and facilitating a seminar on indigenous rights. Final evaluation of the ILO Global Indigenous Navigator Initiative (ILO GINI) which sought to empower indigenous peoples through community-based monitoring, advocacy and action to address gaps in progress towards the SDGs in Cambodia, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Colombia, Kenya, Nepal, Peru, Philippines, Suriname and Tanzania. Specific tasks included: 1) Preparation of induction report and kick-off meeting2) Desk review of project related documents.3) Development of questions matrix and data gathering and analysis tools.4) Online interviews and focus group discussions with over 100 stakeholders.5) Field visits to indigenous communities in Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, Steung Treng, Ratanakiri & Mondulkiri Provinces, Cambodia, and Mymensingh and Rajshahi Divisions & Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh.6) Coordination and quality management of the work of 2 sub-consultants covering Africa and South America.7) Preparation of the final report and presentation of findings to key stakeholders in the ILO GINI project.

Team leader for the final evaluation of the project ‘Indigenous Peoples & Sustainable Forest Management in Central Sulawesi' which was funded by Rainforest Foundation Norway (RFN) and implemented by Yayasan Merah-Putih (YMP), a local NGO based in Palu, Central Sulawesi, with a focus on conflict resolution, empowerment of indigenous peoples and other forest dependent communities, and community-based forest management. Field work was conducted over six days in Jakarta and Bogor, and ten days in Central Sulawesi and invloved:1) Participating in the National Land Tenure Seminar and meeting with representatives of RFN, YMP, and various other AMAN (The Indonesian Indigenous Peoples Alliance) and various other government and civil society organization based in Jakarta and Bogor involved in indigenous peoples and land rights issues in Indonesia.2) Meetings with YMP personnel as well as other local government agencies, NGOs, academics and other stakeholders.3) Traveling across Central Sulawesi to visit indigenous and other forest dependent communities involved in the RFN-YMP Project.4) Preparation of the evaluation report, lessons learned and recommendations.

Leading a small team of 2 evaluators conducting the independent mid-term evaluation of the project “Forest zone protection in the Papuan Birdshead region through sustainable forest management by indigenous communities and government’, which was funded by Rainforest Foundation Norway and implemented by Paradisea Foundation Manokwari. This project focused on participatory mapping and land-use planning, documentation of indigenous knowledge, advocacy for legal recognition of land and resource rights, agroforestry and community-based forest management. The evaluation was based on its own internal performance criteria (i.e. those specified in the project design documents), with the main focus on project implementation, outputs and impact during the period of 2013-2015.

Advising the Hepburn Shire Council regarding the management and restoration of the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens in Daylesford, Victoria. Wombat Hill BG has a collection of rare mature conifers, many of which are approaching senescence or threatened by storms, lightening strikes, drought and diseases. In this role I developed a master plan including conducting GIS mapping and tree health survey of existing collections, devolped a botanical collection plan and collection renewal plan, as well as facilitating consultations with various stakeholders regarding their vision and concerns regarding the management of the gardens and proposed masterplan.

In-depth assessment of conservation, natural resource management and development programs in Indonesian Papua. This included conducting field work with local university counterparts over a period of six months in 12 regencies across Papua, preparation of a comprehensive literature review, reporting and field management.

Activities & programs initiated during this period included:- Research on farming systems, food security, nutritional and economic needs of rural communities in Jayawijaya;- Sustainable farming, agroforestry and social-forestry programs for degraded and steeply sloping land;- Mushroom culture trials including establishment of a tissue culture laboratory and field trials; - Introduction, quarantining, propagation & trialling of a range of fruit tree varieties;- Animal husbandry (rabbits, chickens & goats & bee keeping) in collaboration with World Vision Indonesia.- Ecotourism programs in collaboration with the Jayawijaya Tourism Service & local NGOs in Biak & Merauke;- A tourist cave project including construction of facilities & training of guides & community management body;

Assisting with the planning & implementation of an Integrated Conservation and Development Program for indigenous communities living within the Lorentz World Heritage Area and its buffer zones.- Providing field data on the flora, geography, caves & karst and anthropology of the Lorentz wilderness area;- Assisting with the preparation of the World Heritage proposal & advising on the realignment of park boundaries; - Assisting with organizing the initial strategic planning workshop and follow-up program development processes;- Facilitating relations with local NGOs, missions & indigenous communities to establish support for the program; - Assisting with training workshops, study tours & customary land mapping in the buffer zones of the Lorentz NP;- Assisting with planning of agriculture, forestry & ecotourism development activities in the park’s buffer zones.

Provided capacity building and program development support to small indigenous NGO. This work led directly to the formation of a partnership between YBAW and the WWF Lorentz Program, whereby the YBAW has subsequently come to be recognized as one of the most successful and innovative NGOs in West Papua. My role included supporting:- Organizational re-structuring and the improvement of operational procedures & protocols;- Training and capacity building for members of the executive body;- Needs assessment, program design & proposal preparation relating to the protection of the Habbema-Trikora wilderness area & sustainable economic development for indigenous communities;- Networking with other local and international NGOs and donors.
