About Robert Howard

Our world is rife with change. Technology disrupts business models & ways people expect to interact with us. We also face increased competition. Many people react to these changes with fear, uncertainty, & doubt. They over-invest or under-invest. They delay or panic. These do not lead to good outcomes.I worked the last 20 years to become an expert in helping institutions & people successfully realize opportunities & minimize cost/risk at the intersection of technology & university/healthcare operations. At times IT is the face of wanted or unwanted change to the way we’ve always done something. The MS in leadership & organizational change gave me theory & practice in implementing strategies for shaping culture & processes to get desired results. The MBA helped me better understand how technology can improve health care outcomes. I'm working on a doctorate because I'm an insatiable learner. My primary skill is helping people—our only true competitive advantage-- use technology effectively to automate & remove cost/complexity so we can spend less time on rote things & more time on things that are distinctive & provide competitive advantage.I like technology a lot but like people even more.I like solving little, big, or impossible problems. Listening helps.I try not to make the same mistake twice.I have helped organizations move from reactive, to planned, to agile & innovative.I balance stability & innovation (transparency & trust are vital)I invest in people & hold them accountable for their best work. We plan, communicate, & execute well.I teach courses to connect to the mission.I develop leaders and teams that get the job done. We have fun too. Those teams then help organizations maximize investments in technology for consistent & sustainable results.I know all the CIO buzzwords & how to use them: virtualize, cloud, security, entrepreneur, governance, BPO, BI, PMO, ROI, VDI, MOOC, big data, green, social, mobile.
