Profile bio

About Robert Jacobs

I'm a software and hardware enthusiast. I love to develop for and work with custom hardware and software projects. I like small fancy things, but also love big and bulky machines. In my spare time I create custom software and hardware for automations in and around the house, do a lot of 3D printing, work on my home made CNC router and CNC CO2 laser machines, and I do some gaming to kill some time with friends.Next to the software and hardware projects I also own high end FPV quadcopter gear. The quadcopter is used for some high speed First Person View (FPV) flying. This is used to fly freely like a bird around and through buildings and race against others in real-time.

Listed skills include Embedded Systems, Software Design, Software Engineering, C++, and 19 others.

Technical Team Lead

Fourtress Bv

Eindhoven Area, Netherlands

One of trends followed by Fourtress BV is the introduction of robots in a human environment. In order to get more insights in this field of work, Fourtress is investing in the research and creation of a autonomous robot for the use in the Fourtress office. The robot must eventually be able to navigate autonomously, recognize voice and gesture commands and must be able to point clients to the person they are having a meeting with and giving a tour around the office.First I have worked together with three graduation students for their bachelor in computer science, sharing my knowledge in robotics gained during my own graduation. Shortly after they got their bachelor degree, I returned to the office for a while, working together with two other engineers to work further on the base, founded by the bachelor students. As a technical team lead and SCRUM master, I was responsible for the setup of the project and planning, setting up development tooling like JIRA, GIT and confluence, talking to stakeholders to define and validate the work needed to make this project possible, provide technical help for team members and do actual implementation of the hardware and software architecture. When I left for my next assignment, we had completed the base controls including sensors and actuators, controlled by a modular and robust robot framework.

Graduate Intern Robotics Engineer

Zuyd Research - Technology In Care

Heerlen

For my bachelor thesis I have worked in two "Robotics in care" projects, namely the ACCOMPANY and ZUROS projects. The ACCOMPANY project was an EU funded project fulfilled by a multitude of EU companies and universities. This project focused on research regarding the possibilities of elderly people living at home for a longer period of time, by the use of robotics companions. This research was conducted with the help of the German Fraunhofer IPA institute, which supplied their Care-o-bot 3 robot with additional software for this project. The ZUROS project was an extension of the ACCOMPANY project, where acquired knowledge was used to create the base for an universal robotics platform for care research projects. The hardware base was provided by the Dutch TU Delft. For the ACCOMPANY project I was responsible for the setup of the robot, infrastructure and the sensor environment with ZWAVE. I was also responsible for preparing and supervising the tests with the elderly people in regards to the software and hardware systems. For the ZUROS project I was responsible for designing the software architecture, testing of base functionality and creating a testing environment with ZWAVE sensors. Further responsibility was to document all systems and acquired knowledge so that future students of ZUYD university could proceed with the research.Result of the ACCOMPANY project was a working robotics and environment system during the user tests. Bugs were gathered during setup and resolved in cooperation with the Fraunhofer IPA's engineers.Result of the ZUROS project was a working base robot platform, which was able to navigate autonomously in a mapped room. This was done using a Asus XTION pro camera, which was used as a laser scanner. Documentation and modular software setup will help future students with extending the robotics platform for future projects.

Technical Team Lead Shell Eco Marathon Computer Science Group

Hogeschool Zuyd

The Shell Eco Marathon is a yearly event organized by Shell. This event focusses on energy efficiency and packs this in an exciting competition. Hogeschool Zuyd also participated in this race with their team called "Euregio runners". In the year 2013 I became part of the team as a team lead for the IT group of the Euregio runners. The IT team had to find a way to help the Electronics and Energy teams creating software to get insights in energy consumption and status of the electric car. Requirements were a pit lane and car application with live communication in between each other, just like a formula one race team.As a team lead I was responsible for keeping an eye on progress (including planning), gathering requirements, creating designs and keep an eye on software implementation, quality and requirements validation. I was also responsible for the hardware able to keep track of the car's status.Result was a modular software architecture which was used during the actual races of the car. Logs of the races were gathered, stored and used to determine energy efficience of the car and getting insights what to improve with version 2 of the car.Effective cooperation between the teams resulted in further cooperation between the different faculties of Hogeschool Zuyd

Intern Embedded Software And Hardware Engineer

Innovatest

Maastricht

For the R&D division of Innovatest, a manufacturer of hardness testing machines, I have conducted research regarding the Renesas RX62N processor.Innovatest's market hardness testing machines had a specific type of processor and hardware which was reaching it's limitations. In general the screen refresh rate was slow and also the hardware limitations resulted in a machine feeling slow and less intuitive to the operator. Innovatest's wish was to be able to deliver a touch screen with the newer types of hardness testers, improving user experience and keeping up with technology. My research focused on investigation this specific type of processor, its possibilities regarding a touch screen and proposing software archtecture design for future implementation. This included creating demo projects, system design and partially system implementation.Research resulted in a set of test projects, a system design and partial implementation of this design. In addition to this an extensive set of documentation was delivered to Innovatech for future reference and further implementation of the system.Test projects included a port from C to C++, SPI and RS232 communcation and helper classes for GUI elements like a progress bar.http://www.innovatest-europe.com/
