About Robert Kunkel
I am a graduate student at the University of Oklahoma pursuing a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.Since Fall of my Junior year in 2016, I have worked as a research assistant in the Biomechanics and Biomaterials Design Lab (BBDL) at OU. As a leader for the BBDL’s aneurysm occlusion project, I regularly perform chemical syntheses, conduct mechanical characterization of materials, and design and manufacture new lab equipment. Regular progress in the BBDL has given me the opportunity to develop proficiencies in data analysis, oral presentation drafting and delivery, and manuscript preparation. I also spent two years as the manipulation team lead on OU’s Sooner Rover Team. In this role, I led a team of students through the entire process of research, design, manufacturing, and testing to create a robotic arm to be mounted on a mars rover prototype. Outside the wealth of engineering knowledge gained in this role, I gained experience in fundraising, budgeting, part selection and vendor coordination, timeline management, and asset allocation within a team. I have spent my college career deeply involved in engineering design projects not because of any obligation, but because I truly love what I do. I am looking for work in a design or analysis position where I can continue doing what I love and make the world a little bit better while I'm at it.

Undergraduate student researcher Nov. 2016 - May 2017Graduate student researcher May 2017 - PresentDesigning, manufacturing, and testing a novel implantable aneurysm occlusion device made from shape memory polyurethane. Leading a team to design & build a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) imaging system to validate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of aneurysm blood flow. Designing and building a custom Direct Ink Writing (DIW) printer compatible with shape memory polyurethane materials. Conducted biaxial testing and material analysis of porcine mitral and tricuspid heart valve tissues.Synthesized polyurethane shape memory polymers (SMP) and investigated their use for the treatment of aneurysms.Designed and manufactured a nitrogen glovebox for SMP synthesis and other lab devices based on sketches and CAD schematics.As a leader within this lab, I have been invited to deliver oral presentations at a multitude of conferences including the 2018 World Congress on Computational Mechanics and the 2018 Engineering Mechanics Institute Conference.My research has resulted in two papers of which I am the primary author and a handful more both under preparation and successfully published of which I am a co-author.
Space Technologies Intern
Responsible for reading and analyzing all 115 NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) research final reports between 2011 and 2015.Communicated with NIAC program directors regarding compiled trends and statistics that quantified the quality and success of NIAC Fellow research with the goal of justifying continued program funding.Through reading these reports and interacting with NIAC leadership, I became familiar with the conventions for technical document and grant preparation within NASA and with a wide range of prominent challenges faced by NASA and the space industry.

Investigated the radiation transfer modelling of lunar lava tubes using HZETRN 2015 for Analytic Services reporting to Dr. Ron Turner. Performed simulations using lunar lava tube geometry to validate HZETRN 2015’s use for future research.Research resulted in a co-authored publication with Dr. Ron Turner presented at the 2017 International Conference on Environmental Systems (ICES) entitled "Radiation Environment Inside a Lunar Lava Tube"
