I very much enjoyed working for Rockwell Collins in my 20s. Very fast promotions, some fantastic bosses and mentors and working comrades that are still friends today. Traveled internationally all the time and lived in Paris for a year. Also, challenged with one of my first major pivot points in my career while there: They offered me the President position at their Hong Kong subsidiary. At 28, that was a marvelous opportunity but after living in Paris for a year and just wrapping up my MBA, I was determined to resign and start my own real estate investment company. They were persistent - each time I said no, the next executive up the chain at Collins and Rockwell pitched and sweeten the deal again. My life path would have been totally different if I had taken the deal - but even in hindsight, I am glad I started my own company instead - the same company I still run 35 years later!

Another ancient position in Oak Ridge that is recalled with fond memories - applied science and computer science developing leading and bleeding edge computer networking (for the time) and software development - with the goal of interfacing 18 mini-computers to a remote located large mainframe computer to provide real time data capture for the Tokamak Fusion Reactor physics experiment. This stuff looks trival in light of today's technology - but not so much back then!I often miss the wonderful science and scientific research environment that I had at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NASA. That's something that's very difficult to find in the business world in which I have lived since starting my company when I was 29 – and one of the major reasons that I love working with high-tech startup companies and helping make them successful.
