Executive Director

The Collaborative

Dallas & The Rio Grande Valley, Texas

Working through a grant provided to IDEA Public Schools and Uplift Education, both in Texas, The Collaborative was a shared resource for curriculum development and teacher training. As Executive Director, I held ultimate decision rights to the projects we engaged in, managed the staff working with our client school systems on various projects, managed our $5M budget, and reported to the grantor on our activities.

Director Of Curriculum And International Baccalaureate Programs

Rio Grande Valley, Texas

While at IDEA, our goal was to become the first low-income school system in the United States to provide all three International Baccalaureate (IB) Programs (Primary Program, Intermediate Program, and the Diploma Program) to 100% of its students. My job was to interface with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), provide the required teacher training to achieve and maintain IB certification, and to design and develop a brand new k-12 curriculum aligned to IB and our own local goals.

Science Teacher

Glen Oaks Senior High School

After getting married and moving to Baton Rouge, I chose to teach in a school with one of East Baton Rouge Parish's lowest success rates. It this point in my teaching career I decided to focus on ninth grade. Still teaching physical science, I reasoned that if I was going to help kids who were at risk of not graduating get on a track that could lead to college, ninth grade would be the place to do it. To this end we formed the Ninth Grade Academy, which I led, to work towards changing the school culture to one of effort and achievement. During my years at Glen Oaks I was elected Teacher of the Year by my peers, received National Board certification, and continued to train new teachers both in the Parish and around the country.

Aug 2002 - Jun 2006

Science Teacher

Opelousas Senior High School

As a driven new teacher, I strove to innovate. Teaching ninth grade Physical Science, twelfth grade physics, and a few other courses in between I sought out the toughest kids with the lowest perceived potential and worked my tail off to make college a viable choice for them. Necessity required that I teach more with less materials. This led to my most popular of several teacher training workshops I would lead call "Rob LoPiccolo is Cheap and Easy" which demonstrated how to teach high-value science with low-cost materials.

Manuscript Assistant, Press Contact, Office Manager

Washington D.C. Metro Area

I held three positions in the North American headquarters of the international science publication Nature. As a Manuscript Assistant I got to handle all the exciting research papers that were coming through the peer review process on their was to publication (or rejection). One of my responsibilities in this role was to call peer reviewers who were late and remind them of their deadline. Most of the time, this involved calling over-worked professors who were still fighting for tenure and this was just "one more thing" on their plate. Every once in a while, however, I got to call the private lines for prominent scientists including Nobel Prize winners and tell them they were late. That was fun. Was Press Contact I put together our weekly press releases and was the first responder for the press. Usually this would be just me putting reporters in touch with people who knew what they were talking about. But I got to talk to some well known science reporters. This was fun too. My last job with Nature was as Office Manager. I gained valuable experience managing a staff and a budget, but the role wasn't for me.
