Profile bio

About Robert Mcadams

I started programming in high school. Back then I was all about HTML and web pages. That led to CGI/Perl and interactive web pages. That led to server scripting and Linux programming. After that, it all snowballed pretty fast into the much larger enterprise-level skill set I have today. At the core of it all, though, is myself from high school, exploring my family's first home computer. Unlike the computers at school, I was able to wipe the operating system and put on different ones. I was able to configure things the way that seemed the most logical to me, and I was able to dive in deep into how it all worked. I haven't really ever resurfaced from that dive :)I have worked for some really awesome companies. I have learned a lot of technologies. I consider myself to be at the expert skill level for the core skills I use daily. But man, in a lot of ways I am still that kid trying to figure out how to encode my own MIDI files into my first web page, and writing my own guest book and visitor counters from scratch because none of the free ones worked the way I wanted. And yeah, I have to fight the occasional code demon, but I consider that a small price to pay for what I get to do.Programming is one of the largest and best puzzles on earth. I am determined to solve it as best I can :)

Listed skills include C#, Asp.Net, Sql, Java, and 30 others.

Lead .Net Software Engineer

Current

Houston, Texas, Us

My role in recent years has expanded to include being the Technical Lead for HPE CodeWars ( hpecodewars.org) as well as the Program Lead for HPE's School Certificates Program ( schoolcerts.ext.hpe.com )In addition to that, I am still working with a talented development group to support the Business Intelligence team for HPE/Aruba Networking. Working on various production and in-development projects spanning the full software development life cycle, and utilizing various skills in the .NET ecosystem such as Web Services, Shared Assemblies, Web Applications, and Desktop Applications.

Sep 2014 - Present

Programmer Ii

California School Boards Association

I was brought in to analyze, design, implement, and maintain information systems and support computer software applications. I helped evaluate and diagnose computer software problems associated with the Association’s information technology infrastructure. I designed, coded, tested, deployed, documented and analyzed new software programs and applications using the full software development life cycle and Association standards. I launched one major coding project to production which the Association is still using, and I worked with the programming team on several ongoing projects and modules.

Apr 2014 - Sep 2014

Programmer

Old Republic Title Company

I was originally brought on to Old Republic Title to finish & fix a website application done in C#/ASP.NET that was to replace a legacy DOS-based system. While I tried to simply complete the project as it was left to me, I ended up scrapping what was originally done (with all levels of management in full agreement) and implementing a much faster & simpler solution to the problem, that worked much better deployed to our heavy-usage infrastructure. My next project was to create a web-service (using WCF) that could talk to all of the various data vendors our company uses, & map their data to a single format for the service, and make the output available to our 3rd party partners, and internally to our own applications. No matter what vendor a request uses, the data output from the service is always in the same format for the requesting client. Additionally, the web-service was deployed as a failsafe service that has automatic backups ready to rollover to, should one of the services not be available for any reason. That allows nodes of the service to be taken offline for maintenance without interrupting the work of the service or the clients using it, and it also allows more nodes to be brought online to increase capacity seamlessly. The web-service was also designed to allow load distribution; if more than one working service is online, and multiple requests come in at the same time, the system will automatically distribute the load among the working services. The next project I worked on dovetailed nicely with the web-service project. I was tasked with creating an intranet website application using AJAX techniques to asynchronously communicate with the web-service and retrieve data based on user requests, and to then process and use the data according to internal company logic and user needs. At the same time I put in support to use the web-service in various company-wide legacy applications, to enable our users to use the web-service in our existing applications.

Jul 2010 - Apr 2014

Senior Project

Ca Dept. Of Public Health

As the team leader for a four person software web design project, directed and managed the creation of a new intranet website for the CA Dept. of Public Health using ASP.NET and MS SharePoint to distribute and manage the system. This one-year project encompassed the entire software development life cycle including requirements and specifications, proposal development, customer consultation, software design, testing, development of user and maintenance manuals and delivery of a comprehensive user report and final presentation.

Jan 2009 - Dec 2009

Student Programmer

Sacramento, California, Us

Converted legacy spreadsheet "database" for approved test labs to a relational database using MS Access. Additionally, I have created front-end input forms to allow for data control and to allow non-technical users to use the system. I have fully documented the database code, and created both user and admin/technical manuals.
