Relocated to the University of Edinburgh with Prof Baker's group, this move has been particularly exciting for me, since I have been able to initiate a number of collaborations with researcher focus on chronic inflammation. I am currently working with Prof. Andriano Rossi & Ian Dransfield to try and identify novel therapies that enhance the resolution of the inflammatory response. I am particularly excited by recent advances in clinical successes of biologics that target the IL-17 and IL-23 pathway. I am also collaborating with Prof. David Newby & Prof. Nicholas Mills to identify a number of novel biomarkers in patients with inflammatory vascular disease.
Lecturer
In this role I managed multiple projects and supervised a number of staff/students in the area of vascular and pulmonary remodeling following acute or chronic inflammation and injury. I have a particular interested in a number of systemic inflammatory conditions that enhance the cardiovascular risk factors in these patient populations. I have developed a number of inflammatory in vitro and in vivo models of vascular inflammation which we utilize to determine the clinical efficacy of a number of small molecule inhibitors.
Post Doctoral Scientist
This project investigated the potential of microRNA (miRNA) as pathological mediators of vascular inflammation and remodeling following coronary artery stenting or vein grafting. This project evaluated the potential therapeutic benefit of a number of microRNAs know to regulate inflammatory cell recruitment and matrix remodeling. We demonstrated that knockdown of miR-21 reduces inflammatory cytokine release and enhances resolution of the inflammatory response. (Collaboration: Prof Andrew Baker and Prof Song Wan, Chinese University of Hong Kong).
Post-Doctoral Scientist
Research project focused on the role of a novel decoy chemokine receptor (D6) to reduce inflammatory cells recruitment and atherosclerosis using a number of pharmacological and genetic approaches to enhance or repress D6 expression. (Collaboration: Prof Gerry Graham and Prof Andrew Baker).
The University Of Edinburgh
Investigating the mechanisms through which endothelin (ET-1) regulates blood pressure, natriuresis and renal haemodynamics. These studies utilized a number of pharmacological and genetic approaches to identify the role of ET-1 in natriuresis.
Post Doctoral Scientist
Industrial funded drug discovery project with time shared between Organon and the Bristol Heart Institute. This project identified a number of novel targets following array profiling of stable and unstable atherosclerotic plaques. The potential importance of these targets was subsequently validate following pharmacological or genetic knockdown of these targets in mice maintain on an atherosclerotic background. During this collaborative project I constructed quarterly reports and presentations to members of the cardiovascular new approach team to identify and prioritize project progression and lead target identification.
Post Doc
Doctor Of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Cardiovascular Pharmacology
Modulation of the inflammatory response to acute vascular injury
Bachelor Of Science (Bsc)Hons, Immunology & Pharmacology
