About Roberto Alfieri

I’m a Marine Biologist with a specialization in Aquaculture and Aquariology and also a PADI Instructor with a good water skills, boat experience and perfect fitness.I’ve U.S. & Italian citizenship, and speak English , Italian and Spanish. I also understand and practice a little bit of Portuguese.I've 4+ years of experience working in accredited Aquariums. After an internship at the Oceanario de Lisboa and a research project at the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal, I've been hired from the Acquario di Genova in Italy where I worked in the Mediterranean and reptiles department as Aquarist/Diver.From January 2019, I’m working as Senior Aquarist/Dive Safety Officer/Shark Keeper at the Long Island Aquarium (USA) in the Fishes, Birds and Reptiles Department. Here, I’m the Supervisor of the Shark Dive Program, that consists of DSD experience using OTS Full Face Mask. I also coordinate and train Interns and Aquarists. I guide them with their assigned daily duties/tasks. I’m responsible for showing and helping them on all the aspects of their job. In addition, being a PADI Instructor, I trained several students, some of whom were my coworkers, and got them certified by PADI - Open Water Diver. I manage the Fish Department Team, in charge of their schedule, fish order, fish movement and relocation, freezer organization, collection and permits paperwork, display assignment and daily operation assignments. I am able to work with more or less LSS complexes, based on the size of the tanks and the animals contained. I'm able to manage them, maintain them, fix them, and allow them work properly. I'm able to plumb and built a system, take a part and service pumps, and skilled in applying easily policies and procedures. I take care of Transfer process, Acclimatization process, Quarantine process, Feeding : force feeding and dive feeding process, Daily observations of health and behavior of the individuals, Associated paperworks, Periodic exhibit maintenance, Periodic weight and daily healthy checks, Regular water quality testing, Water parameters corrections Cleaning, Reproduction and Husbandry, Administration of treatments prescribed by the veterinarian. I have involved in packing of marine life for airline shipments using bags, oxygen, heat pack or ice pack, styros and boxes.I developed, during my working experience, problem solving, practical sense and good adaptability.Good team work skills and good interpersonal skills with my colleagues but also with clients, visitors and guests.

    At this time, in collaboration with the Live Exhibits’ Curator, I perform as the Disease Specialist and practice basic disease diagnostic techniques as well as set up appropriate quarantine and disease treatment protocols for marine animals. I work extensively with both saltwater and freshwater fish, and I have a deep understanding of the different ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them.I am currently responsible for maintaining exhibit aesthetics and water quality, acquiring specimens, feeding and maintaining animal health in accordance with policies, procedures and protocols, developing education, training, and media relations. I work extremely well in groups. I have a large amount of experience working with the public: develop and give presentations on marine biology to staff, and off-site audiences of all ages.
