I started my experience at SKIL (Semantics and Knowledge Innovation Lab) in the middle of 2011, just a few weeks after its foundation by Telecom Italia. One of the missions of the lab was expoloring the new trend of Big Data topic in order to undersand how this paradigm could be effectevely applied to a telecommunication company like Telecom Italia. I had the opportunity to lead the team working on this task.Considering that other deperatments of the company were already working on the exploitation of Big Data in order to optimize internal processes, we focused on the external monetization of Big Data, with the objective of developing innovative B2B abd B2C services. In this context we faced challenges concerning the whole Big Data ecosystem:- Finding the most suitable data srouces to work with and accomplishing the hard task to interact with the right departments in order to collect them- Understanding the opportunities offered and the limits imposed by the privacy law - Understanding the vast word of Big Data technologies in order to paln and set up a Big Data infrastructure able to collect and anlyze the enormous data stream at reasonable price- Analysing the data in order to extract valuable information- Understanding which were the most promising way to exploit the data from a business point of viewDuring the past four years we set up numerous trials in ordert to show the value of the Big Data approach. The company evaluated extremely positively the efforts of the lab, and this year decided that the time was mature to invest more on the Big Data topic creating a dedicated department.Currently the lab is still part of the team working on Big Data solutions, but its effort are more focused on the most innovative aspects. In particular we are applying new analtics to Telecom Italia data and exploring possible ways to use this data in combination with that of other private companies.
