Technical Product SpecialistAmyris May 2015 - Mar 2016Emeryville, Ca, Us• Brought to market Muck Daddy™ high performance scrubbing wipes in two stock keeping units (SKU) under a condensed timeline. Responsible for contract manufacturer evaluation, selection, and agreement negotiation, as well as project management, formula selection, development of quality control plan (QCP), and onsite presence during manufacturing for technical and quality support. Coordinated third-party regulatory testing of wipe liquid formulation which included review of testing procedures and results. Performed and helped develop internal testing protocols for label claims.• Managed manufacturing of five Muck Daddy™ hand cleaner SKU at a single contract manufacturer and provided onsite technical support during manufacturing. Helped solve manufacturing issues in collaboration with the contract manufacturer such as reducing fill time and quality control realignment. Responsible for testing, selection, and procurement of some components. Improved the hand cleaner formulation between pilot and first manufacturing campaign and internally performed stability testing.• Responsible for developing new Myralene™ 10 based formulations for different applications both internally and with external parties. Evaluated different contract manufacturers as potential product development partners and to expand manufacturing capabilities of existing SKU. -
Scientist IAmyris Mar 2015 - May 2015Emeryville, Ca, Us -
Senior Associate ScientistAmyris Dec 2012 - Mar 2015Emeryville, Ca, Us• Performed feasibility and process development experiments to bring to market the renewable solvent Myralene™ 10, Amyris’ latest commercial product. Performed the hydrogenation kinetic experiments to develop the commercial batch process using a heterogeneous catalyst at 2 metric tonne scale. Prepared the technology transfer package for the contract manufacturing organization (CMO) and traveled to the CMO site to provide technical support during the first product campaign, which produced on-spec product from the first batch.• Optimized the formulation of a waterless hand cleaner by testing various formulations in the laboratory. Prepared the technology transfer package and worked directly with the contract manufacturing organization (CMO) scaling up the process to 1 and 10 metric tonne scale. Helped with filing of regulatory permits.• Member of a team tasked with reducing production cost of Amyris’ commercial product Neossance Squalane. Responsible for performing experiments at gram scale related to coupling, hydrogenation, vacuum distillation and adsorption, analyzing the data, and providing recommendations for modifications to implement at scale. Provided technical expertise on-site at the CMO during implementation of a solvent recycle process improvement that resulted in production cost savings of $1/kg of squalane.• Manager of Amyris’ hydrogenation laboratory. Responsible for the safety, reactor maintenance and reconfiguration, training of personnel, and development and writing of standard operating procedures of the hydrogenation laboratory, a facility equipped with various high-pressure batch reactors of varying sizes and capabilities.• Experience with Process Hazards Reviews, both at laboratory and commercial scale. -
Associate Scientist IiiAmyris Oct 2012 - Dec 2012Emeryville, Ca, Us -
Associate Scientist IiAmyris Mar 2009 - Oct 2012Emeryville, Ca, Us• Performed gram scale screening experiments for yield optimization in the synthesis of squalane that included evaluation of different homogeneous and supported catalysts, effects of different ligands on product profile, and structure confirmation of the major side-product. The optimized synthesis was scaled from gram to kilogram scale, including bench to pilot scale transfer of a hydrogenation in a continuous flow reactor. The reaction conditions determined from these studies were used for manufacturing of squalane at the CMO. • Designed and carried out all experiments for conversion of muconic acid to butadiene and acrylates via metathesis resulting in patent WO2013/082264 A1.• Planned and executed multi-step syntheses for the production of novel and known molecules with applications as lubricants, surfactants, cosmetic ingredients, and plasticizers, starting from isoprenoids and other microbially derived molecules. Various distillation techniques were utilized to isolate these products and the physical properties of the purified compounds were determined. These discovery chemistry activities were key to Amyris developing commercial products.• Synthesized and purified various molecules that served as standards for Analytical Chemistry, vital to analytical method development. -
Associate Scientist IAmyris Aug 2007 - Mar 2009Emeryville, Ca, Us• Performed gram scale heterogeneous catalyst experiments in batch reactors for production of Amyris renewable diesel that included catalyst screening, optimization of hydrogenation conditions, evaluation of various feedstocks in the process, effects of impurities on product quality and processing time, and helped with filling regulatory permits for the renewable diesel.• Carried out multiple stability studies on farnesene under varied conditions to determine optimum storage and transportation conditions as well as selection of the most effective stabilizer/inhibitor, resulting in U.S. Patent 8519204.• For the multi-step synthesis of the anti-malarial drug artemisinin starting from artemisinic acid, executed process development experiments to increase artemisinin yield that included a design of experiment (DOE) and catalyst synthesis. Contributed towards writing of a technical transfer package for the artemisinin synthesis delivered to the collaborating pharmaceutical company (Sanofi-Aventis), which successfully replicated our process. -
InternAmyris May 2007 - Aug 2007Emeryville, Ca, Us• Performed milligram scale process development experiments for yield optimization of the multi-step synthesis of artemisinin, an anti-malarial drug, from artemisinic acid. -
InternActivx Biosciences Feb 2005 - Aug 2005La Jolla, Ca, Us• Synthesized serine hydrolase inhibitor AX4870 and other in-house probes for utilization by Biology• Purified target compound intermediates and products by flash column chromatography and HPLC, which included characterizing compounds by 1H and 13C NMR, UV-VIS, and mass spectrometry.
