Roberto Formato is an international consultant, with over 25-year experience working in Tourism Economics and Destination Management, with sound knowledge of Policy Making, Strategy and Marketing Planning for the public sector.He holds 10-year experience as Head of Tourism at government institutions and as Managing Director at Cultural Foundations and at Cultural Heritage Sites.He gained a first degree in Management & Economics Engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan, a Master of Science in Tourism Planning and Development at the University of Surrey in UK (centre of excellence of the World Tourism Organization) and a further Executive Master in Public Management, with a major in Financial Management and Methods, at the Hertie School of Governance in Germany.He has extensive experience in tourism development projects promoted by international institutions (World Bank, African Development Bank, European Investment Bank, etc.) in Europe, South East-Europe, Africa (Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zanzibar), Middle East (Afghanistan, Armenia, Kurdistan, Jordan, Palestine), Golf Countries (EAU, Oman, Saudi Arabia), Centre-South America (El Salvador, Bolivia) and South East Asia (Cambodia).He is very familiar with Cost-Benefit Analysis and decision tools for prioritization of Public Investment Projects in the tourism sector, with deep knowledge of the methodologies applied by the European Commission and the World Bank.He has been Senior Researcher in Tourism Economics at the Italian National Research Council, by which he was appointed – for five years - as component of the National Report of the Italian Tourism, on behalf of Prime Minister’s Office, being direct responsible for Tourism Policies.He published books on Destination Management and Smart Public Spending, fostering a new approach to public spending for Tourism and Culture particularly. He has been teaching Tourism and Cultural Economics at various university courses, currently at Unitelma Sapienza in Rome.
