About Roberto Natella
I am Associate Professor at the Federico II University of Naples, Italy, and co-founder of Secureware s.r.l. (a joint venture with DigitalPlatforms S.p.A.) and Critiware s.r.l. (formerly an academic spin-off company). My research interests are in software security and dependability. The main recurring theme of my research activity is the experimental injection of faults, attacks, and stressful conditions, including internal threats such as software bugs, configuration errors, and resource unavailability, and external threats such as malicious payloads, out-of-norm inputs, overloads, and malware. My research topics include:- fuzzing and static analysis- red teaming, adversary emulation, cyber ranges- cyber threat intelligence- machine learning techniques for security- fault injection, robustness testing, dependability benchmarking- software aging and rejuvenation- applications in operating systems and in cloud, mobile, embedded, and virtualization technologiesIn 2022, I received the DSN Rising Star in Dependability Award (https://www.dependability.org/rising-star.html) from the IEEE Technical Committee on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance (TCFT) and the IFIP Working Group 10.4 on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance, for research achievements within 10 years after PhD graduation.I authored more than 80 peer-review papers on software engineering and dependable computing in top-rank journals, including IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, ACM Computing Surveys, and IEEE and ACM conferences, including ICSE, ESEC/FSE, ISSTA, ASE, ICST, DSN, ISSRE, SRDS. I have been PC Chair of the 29th IEEE International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2019).More information about my research activities, scientific publications, and open-source tools and datasets is available on my personal website (http://wpage.unina.it/roberto.natella) and on GitHub (https://github.com/rnatella).

Assistant Professor In Computer Engineering
Post-Doc Researcher And Lecturer
Phd In Computer Engineering
My PhD thesis presents a novel technique and tool for the dependability assessment of component-based software against faulty software components. The technique deliberately injects faults (“bugs”) in a software component for evaluating the fault-tolerance of the software system as a whole.
Founder, R&D
Current
Lecturer
I was lecturer of the following courses:- Software Lifecycle with MDA (32 hours)*- Modularity and Reuse (32 hours)*- The C++ Language and Object-Oriented Programming (40 hours)**- Programming with Threads (32 hours)*** held at MBDA (Finmeccanica company)** held at SELEX-SI (Finmeccanica company)
Visiting Researcher
I was a visiting researcher for 6 months at the CISUC research centre of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, under the supervision of prof. Henrique Madeira. During this period, I worked on improving a Software Fault Injection technique to increase the accuracy of dependability measures. This work was partially supported by the project “CRITICAL Software Technology for an Evolutionary Partnership” (CRITICAL-STEP, http://www.critical-step.eu), Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) number 230672, within the context of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
Junior Researcher
Software fault-tolerance and fault diagnosis in mission-critical distirbuted systems, in the context of the Italian private-public laboratory COSMIC (“Centro di ricerca sui sistemi Open Source per le applicazioni ed i Servizi MIssion Critical”, DM23318, www.cosmiclab.it), and the “Iniziativa Software” Project, which involved Finmeccanica and several Italian universities (www.iniziativasoftware.it).
