I publish about a dozen books as a side business. Why? I live on a farm in Oregon, and my wife and I started raising free-range chickens. Most of the information available at the time was useless, but I discovered that free-range chicken farming was normal 50-100 years ago, so I read all the old poultry publications and Oregon State University's Valley Library and tried the techniques one after the other. Once things were working well, I wrote a book on the most crucial part: "Success With Baby Chicks," and republished older books that shed light on different farming topics. I call this Norton Creek Press, and I have 15 books in print. I wrote three of them, and the rest are reprints.This business mostly runs itself. Every couple of years I go into a whirlwind of activity and put some additional books back into print.

My wife Karen and I were in the free-range chicken and egg business for 25 years, starting in 1996. In the process we rediscovered (and in some cases reinvented) old-fashioned free-range practices, which are set forth in our books under the Norton Creek Press label. We closed the farm business at the end of 2020 due to other interests that had become all-consuming.

For various clients, I wrote technical documentation for an audience of engineers, becoming a product expert in the process. I also wrote technical overviews and other first-line sales and marketing documents.I tend to work backwards through the development chain, writing end-user documentation first, developing best practices, and given time, eventually contributing to the design and architecture of upcoming products. That's how I ended up with over 30 US patents.My background is largely in semiconductors, networking, and computer graphics, with plenty of website design and system administration thrown in. Most products I've worked on emphasized speed over everything else. If necessary, I develop documentation by reverse-engineering the product, with little contact with the product experts.Recent work includes cryptocurrencies, network accelerators, traffic shaping, and website optimization.

Eventually becoming the most senior engineer on the CloudBridge product line, I did just about everything. I used the product every day, wrote the documentation, suggested (and sometimes designed and prototyped) improvements, gave trainings, and supported the field. I earned over thirty U.S. patents related to this product line.

WEITEK was one of the first fabless semiconductor companies. We designed and built high-performance, full-custom chips: math chips, RISC processors, 3D graphics chips, and more. I did a little bit of everything, from writing documentation to participating in architectural designs. I also did quite a bit of collateral writing.
