About Robert Weeks
Imagine this, it's early in the afternoon as you're sitting at your desk, answering emails or maybe making a phone call when you hear the words "CODE BLUE" frantically shouted over a radio. You drop what you're doing and run to the scene of the incident. Other staff are already there, providing care to the person in distress. As you start to put on your protective equipment, you assess how the team is functioning. Correct steps for this situation are being followed, good communication is being maintained between all necessary parties, and a number of responders are in line to rotate in and help.Though situations like this were rare, much of my time in the recreation field was spent preparing the team for this scenario and others like it. Over 16 years, I trained hundreds of staff on response techniques, mentoring them so that they develop the necessary response skills. Now, I shape code to complete tasks, and I’ve discovered surprising similarities between teaching CPR and coding. The if (this) {then do that} structure of coding flows in a way that matches how students would learn the steps for emergency procedures in classes I taught. The critical eye I grew as an instructor helped me identify errors in performance, like I now see errors in code. My communication prowess was furthered by facilitating discussion among learners, much as I now guide conversations on coding problems with my fellow developers. As I continue on my path, I look forward to using my existing talents to aid my growth as I master new skills along the way.
