From Baghdad to the Sydney Opera House, I’ve learned that pressure triggers the same responses—elevated heart rate, adrenaline, negative thoughts—wherever we are. Fear is universal, and so is growth. In July 2024, I shared this perspective in a sold-out talk at Australia’s iconic Utzon Room, reminded once again that pressure is pressure, wherever we face it.My journey to improve performance in high-stakes situations began over 30 years ago, managing a security company in Papua New Guinea. Since then, I’ve worked alongside Nelson Mandela’s bodyguard team, taught unarmed combat to special forces, protected aid workers in the Middle East, and tried my hand at standup comedy at the Edinburgh Fringe. I’ve also had the privilege of coaching high-performing teams in over 20 countries and, in the process, have been fortunate to work with and learn from leaders such as the authors of The Resilience Shield.Leaving school at 15 didn’t end my education; instead, it fuelled a deep respect for lifelong learning. I now hold a Master of Arts in Terrorism, Safety, and Security from Charles Sturt University, have studied mediation at Bond University’s Centre for Dispute Resolution, and completed executive education at the Harvard Kennedy School.Like my book Always a Little Further, my keynotes and workshops adapt personal protection strategies to leadership and resilience.
