Skills For Business / Impact Human Performance Techniques

Skillsforbusiness.Com

I started Skills For Business as a sole trader and supplier of business training programs to large corporations. I specialised in Management Skills, Professional Presentations Skills, Negotiation Skills, Sales Training, Customer Service Skills, Train-the-Trainer, Conference Design and Facilitation and many other people-skills topics. The business quickly grew, and in 1996 I joined with the amazing Rod Matthews and together we became Impact (which stills runs to this day).In 2001, I moved to the Sunshine Coast, where I continued to consult to private clients, designing and running conferences and training programs, as well as providing advice and strategies for various corporate management teams.I consider period of my career from 1992 - 2009 to be one of the most informative and thought-shaping challenges, in adapting and growing with the myriad of businesses that were my clients, and customers who became friends. This wealth of experience cannot be taught – only learned on the ground, so to speak, and is one of my key strengths in analysing business for sale and my professional competence as an expert Business Broker on the Sunshine Coast.

Business Development And Marketing

Quickfityoga

Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia

On moving to Noosa, my wife and I purchased a commercial property and launched a Hot Yoga studio, based on the popular Bikram Yoga method.Together we marketed and grew our membership base, and were the first Hot Yoga studio to open outside of Sydney. We pioneered marketing methods to reduce churn, and to ensure the consistency of experience and quality of instruction.Starting another business from scratch allowed me to bring all my business and sales skills to bear on a brand new market, and (at the time), a little-known product. In 2006 we moved away from Noosa, and to Buderim to be closer to “the education hub of the Sunshine Coast” and for the future of our young daughter. We retained the commercial premises until 2008, where it was sold. The experience of starting, growing and subsequently selling and leasing our business and commercial premises is another reason why I have an affinity with anyone who wants to sell a small business. As a business broker, I’ve been in the very same situation.

Oct 2002 - Dec 2006

Co-Founder And Director

What Burger, “Earth-Friendly, Eco-Food” (Healthy Fast Food)

Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia

In 1995-1996 my wife and I began work on what had been a seed of an idea that grew to become a simple premise: to become the first healthy fast-food franchise. In 1996 we won “Best Financial Plan” in the NSW Enterprise Workshop, and this opened doors for us to find the investors we needed. Our first store opened slap-bang in the middle of the world-famous Bondi Beach shopping strip on Campbell Parade, with a second lease signed in Manly.Even for the best ideas, with great publicity and a loyal following, there is such a thing as an idea “too soon for its time” and although we did achieve recognition by the Heart Foundation and the coveted “tick”, market conditions at Bondi Beach caused by significant road renovations, ate into our capital reserves, and the doors were regrettably closed in 1999.But what we learned in this period cannot be taught at the best business schools. Failure is a part of genuine entrepreneurship, and the lessons learned at What Burger would stay with me for life, and help me be a far more valuable business broker today – and one with a discerning investor’s eye.

Jan 1995 - Dec 1999

Nsw State Manager

Sydney, Australia

One of the most challenging jobs I’ve ever held! Managing a large budget, (always) ambitious targets, impatient band managers and promotions managers, and a margin-starved retail base across the whole of the largest state (population-wise) brought a degree of stress I had not experienced up until then. The music industry is fast-paced, and subject to the whims and fads of a fickle public. Trying to steer and direct this beast; achieve corporate results at the same time as media recognition for Polygram’s huge range of artists at the time was a balancing act like no other.I learned a great deal about how to manage people, and how NOT to manage people (sorry, guys! You know who you are!), and this wild ride helped shaped my views on what is actually possible in business if you put your mind to it … and work crazy hours. The stories I could tell, will never be told, but they contribute to my greater understanding today of what it takes to run a successful business, and to be successful in sales. As a business broker, understanding the issues and pressures impacting on my clients is vital, and Polygram gave me a baptism of fire in both.

Dec 1988 - Dec 1991

National Manager - Blank Tape

Sydney, Australia

I arrived in Australia in 1987, having had a long and successful stint as a sales representative in the Music Industry in the UK, and before that, many years in high-end audio equipment retail (as both manager and sales person). This made me ideally suited to take on the relatively new business development of Sony’s Consumer Tape division. My role consisted of ensuring all retail outlets that stocked competitor products also stocked Sony’s range of cassette and video tape. Our biggest opportunity was two-fold: In music retail stores where the blank tape boom was still being fuelled by the growth in home-copying, and in large supermarket and retail chains such as Coles, Myer, Woolworths and Franklins. In a tough market, we enjoyed moderate growth and success, and the challenges of attempting to live up to lofty goals with zero marketing and advertising budgets, and a product that was excellent in quality, but not always well packaged to the local market taught me a great deal about the challenges of large corporations meeting the needs of small to medium businesses.I had to quickly learn the methods, geography and challenges experienced by retailers in the Australian national market, and this experience still proves valuable today in my role as a business broker, in rapidly assessing and understanding my client’s market and operation.

Jul 1987 - Dec 1988

Audio Equipment Retail Sales; Strikeforce Sales Representative

Superfi; Absolute Sound & Video; Strikeforce

United Kingdom

After graduating from the University of Nottingham with a degree in pure chemistry, I followed my love of all things electronic and audio, and began working as a salesman in the local high-end audio equipment (hi-fi) store.I rose to store management; relocated from Nottingham to Bristol, and helped manage and launch a brand new “CD Superstore” at the time when CDs were beginning to take off, yet with some cynicism within the audiophile industry, who did not regard the format as particularly “pure”.In 1985. I joined a brand new venture, as a sales representative for the entire South West of the UK (England and Wales) servicing music stores and promoting non-mainstream, “alternative” and independent artists. Our mission was to gain album- and song-chart exposure for lesser-known bands and artists that could not get mainstream media attention.I enjoyed the experience of persuading store buyers to part from their set-ways and current loyalties, and to branch out in supporting these alternative acts. It showed me that, where there is a will, there is a way, something often needed when representing businesses for sale as a licensed business broker.
