Hello, I'm Barry.Born and based in the creative city of Dundee in northeast Scotland, I grew up around and continue to make signs, lettering, and advertising graphics.My dad is a signwriter and coachpainter. We worked together for twenty years professionally, until his retirement around 2017. Since early childhood, I brush painted panels, vans, buses, and lorries, whilst also learning traditional signwriting and the tricks of the trade.I've evolved, pivoted, stagnated, realised, wept, worried, celebrated and endured, as most self employed business owners experience.Nowadays, I focus on creating and strengthening visual identities for businesses and organisations. From concept, I design, fabricate, and install almost all types of signs and display graphics.I also create others' artworks, graphic designs, and ideas into tangible, durable, investments.I'm realistic and advocate hand lettering when appropriate.Since its primitive era, I've also championed the use of signmaking software, providing the operator understands and respects fundamental layout for eye appeal.Clients include Dundee Contemporary Arts; Dundee Heritage Trust; V&A Museum of Design; University of St Andrews; The Old Course Hotel; as well as M.O.D., local authorities, high schools, and countless SMEs in and around Dundee.Many of my interests blend with my career. It's my way of life.I love drawing and painting letterforms. I study (although don't practise enough) calligraphy, as well as the endlessly fascinating world of typography and type design.In recent years, I've pursued my passion for books and continue to build a modest library centred on the afore mentioned.Fortunately, I also love identity design, some aspects of marketing, and beautiful copy. Alas, I'll edit this another one hundred times.As I become older, I seek projects which bring me joy. I'm beginning to learn how to control my tendency to say yes, and recognise when my workload is enough.I'm blessed with opportunities to share and explore ideas, conversation, and creativity with my diverse clientele and talented peers.
