Forty Gavels is the biography of my great-grandfather, Reuben G. Soderstrom, who was president of the Illinois AFL-CIO from 1930 to 1970--receiving a gavel for every year of his leadership--leading his 1.2 million members through the most challenging events of the twentieth century.
