I work with a lab team dedicated to developing and testing new microalgae growing methods. My daily tasks include using a flow cytometer assess the density of algae samples, measuring nitrate levels present in each sample using a spectrometer, and mixing chemicals in order to produce a proprietary algae fertilizer. In order to prevent contamination, I often use aseptic technique when gathering samples or working with algae that is still growing. I help sterilize many of the tools we use by using an autoclave and ozone sterilization. Another important part of my job is data entry. All the information gathered on each sample is meticulously entered into dedicated excel documents.

This was position assisting the Lemmon lab at FSU with common lab procedures. While working in this lab I gained many valuable skills. I was instructed in how to extract DNA, conduct gel electrophoresis, use an autoclave, and gather tissue samples from various specimens. Dr. Lemmon’s lab explores speciation using various amphibian, and reptilian test subjects. Dr. Lemmon’s research is approached using a myriad of different disciplines including biogeography, genomics, and behavioral ecology to name a few. By assisting her and her graduate students, my knowledge of these subjects has been reinforced.

I worked under the direction of Dr. Thomas E Miller to design and implement experiments testing for the presence of processing chain commensalism in pitcher plant communities. Through conducting this experiment, I gained valuable skills that relate to the fields of ecology and evolution. I was often in the field gathering pitcher plant samples for experimentation. During these outings I have reinforced my ability to be respectful to the natural environment while working efficiently to gather the data I require. Much of the work we did took place in the laboratory. My lab duties have allowed me to practice using the tools required to complete routine lab activities. Examples include, washing and autoclaving lab equipment, preparing and examining wet mounts, and diluting and plating bacterial samples. Contributing to the experimental design process served to strengthen my problem-solving skills.

I worked from 10:30 pm to 7:30 am. My job was to serve the 200 students living in the dorm I worked on any given night. I helped keep them safe and comfortable by doing rounds every hour and a half, watching the front door, and enforcing the university's rules. On my rounds I would walk through every floor of the dorm to ensure that there are no safety risks or policy violations. If there were any safety risks or policy violations, I was responsible for managing and documenting them. I have experience managing crises and writing detailed reports. I am also able to handle sensitive student information in a safe, responsible manner.

My job duties included ensuring customer satisfaction, bagging groceries, leveling the store, keeping the store clean. in the produce department I was charged with keeping the floor well stocked, arranging fruit and vegetables, and cutting fruits and vegetables for arrangements and displays.
