About Robert Still

With 30 years in the Automotive Design business I have become a skilled Design Engineer with a strong background in surfacing, solid modeling and design methodology. My various positions have taken me all over the vehicle in the areas of Rear & Side closures, Body Structure, Instrument panels, Fascias, Headlamps, Engine compartment & Chassis. This has given me valuable experience creating plastic & metal parts under a multitude of conditions while meeting design requirements. I have also worked internationally in Sweden & Mexico for multiple years. I excel in team environments by working well and communicating ideas with others or independently in complex organizational structures where I can take limited direction to deliver finished products. This experience has given me the skill and knowledge to approach any challenge with the confidence that I can always provide a solution to meet or exceed customer requirements. Currently working in the Advanced Vehicle Design Bumper Fascia Grille group at GM. Because of my extensive background I look forward to any challenge and have confidence that I can solve problems and provide feasible solutions to meet any customer needs.Specialties: Catia V5, NX11, Solid modeling, Surfacing in the areas of BIW, Liftgate closures, Fascias, Cockpits & Headlamp design.

Sr. Design Engineer Advanced Vehicle Design

Wtc

Advanced vehicle design for Bumpers, Fascias, Grills. Our requirements are to develop the first level of design from studio surface with attachment, assembly & tooling feasibility under compressed timing while meeting GM standards & best practices. The flow of the group is high pressure but satisfying and has given me the opportunity to work on most of the components within the front and rear fascias and grilles. When our program load slowed down we took parts from advanced all the way thru production release which kept us in touch with the needs & requirements of the groups we passed programs onto. This position required me to switch from Catia to NX, I was given a one week crash course to learn the system, the rest of my learning was on the fly along with an advanced surfacing course in early 2018.

May 2016 - Nov 2018

Sr. Designer Chassis

Dearborn

Worked on brake pedal, booster/master cylinder & vacuum lines for three truck programs providing 3D packaging, drawing creation & supplier support of new programs & change notices utilizing Teamcenter, AVBOM, WERS (Fords release system) & FECDS (Fords design & drawing standards).I also participated in the setup of global standard component drawings with desired dimension & tolerances for suppliers to follow to ensure consistency from program to program. I took the position in the chassis group so I could stay on with Ford because the new program cycle for the body group was put on hold resulting in a large reduction in headcount so moving was an opportunity to stay with the company until the workflow started back up in body.

Aug 2014 - May 2016

Primary Designer Body Structures & Rr Closures

Dearborn, Mi

Primary designer for the China Edge Body Structures & Lift gate under the RLE purchased services group. We worked with the Ford body group who released the North American Edge two months ahead of us. I took on lift gate design of the seal flange, hinges and inner pnl packaging, this included swing studies, master sections and strut packaging. Taking the primary role I lead meetings with engineering delegated work, checked every part and ensured standards were met for a successful production release. For the last six months of the program I also took over the manager role due to the retirement of our group manager. This was encouraged by the Ford Design manager who had faith I could handle the added responsibility. At the beginning of the program I also assisted the North American team with side closure design.

Jan 2012 - Aug 2014

Primary Designer Body Structures & Rr Closures

Ford De México

Mexico City

Played a key roll as Primary, training, mentoring and leading a group of 11 that expanded to 31 designers in the development of the Body group in Mexico. We achieved the goal of building a team that proved capable of handling two BIW programs while I was still with them. The training requirement was for me to learn the active multi model file linking structure Ford body devised and then teach that along with the body standards and best practices to the designers. While mentoring & training the group I was also the Primary designer for CD390 Lift gate with six designers working under me. I worked out hinge and strut positions along with swing studies, the seal flange and inner panel. To achieve this I used my full knowledge of Catia V5 contextual design, Teamcenter & Ford's Body Cad Authoring Structure. This position was an independent contract, I went to Mexico city not knowing what to expect, what I found was genuine people with a drive to learn & innovate in a city that I could consider home. It was another priceless international experience.

Aug 2010 - Jan 2012

Senior Design Engineer Headlamps

Lincoln & Mercury Headlamp housings, bezels, reflectors, and 2-shot lens design. I also did initial packaging studies for the Corvette headlamp. The designs were set up with 3D parametric solids, surfacing and multi model linking to tie the interfacing areas of the parts together.Catia V5 contextual design.

Feb 2010 - Aug 2010

Sr. Design Engineer Instrument Panels

Catia V5 Volvo Truck 2540, design of Instrument panel, Trim panels and IP structure for the center stack area. Volvo XC90, design of Instrument panel, Glove box and surrounding parts. This Volvo Car SUV program ended up being canceled. For this position I took an independent contract in Gothenburg which lasted 2 years, besides the added IP experience what I gained from relocating myself and getting by in a foreign country has made this a priceless experience. Our team was truly international comprising of members from Sweden, Poland, Spain, England, US, Canada & Iran.

May 2007 - Apr 2009

Lead Designer Ip Trim Panels

Catia V5Ford S197, design, development and packaging of I.P. aluminum wrapped trim panels.Majority of work was done on the center stack & center outlet bezels. Packaging was critical due to the desire of the studio to have the top of the IP so low and so narrow while accommodating all the components needed. I had to refine the material, manufacturing and assembly numbers to their minimum and lead meetings with the studio and engineering to accomplish a design both sides were happy with.

Sep 2005 - May 2007

Sr. Designer

Catia V52007 Toyota 180L Truck, design of headlamp lens and housing.

Dec 2004 - Sep 2005

Sr. Designer

Plastech - Ldm

Catia V5Design of Exterior/Interior Trim, Engine compartment pkg. trays, washer bottles & cowl. The core pieces were the package tray for the battery on the left side and the ECM on the right side with attachments for surrounding components. The intent was to reduce the amount of brackets used in both areas which we achieved. I was also hired to help transition the designers at LDM from Catia V4 to V5, I was paired with the lead designer to be his mentor, he was to mentor other employees with me as he learned more. This plan was cut short due to the company being sold to Plastech.

Jan 2004 - Dec 2004

Sr. Designer

Collins & Aikman - Textron

Catia V5Ford CD338/378 – Design, development and packaging of instrument panel Center stack bezel and center Air outlet bezel/storage bin. The center stack bezel was a straight forward design, The air outlet bezel and storage bin were originally separate pieces. I was able to ingratiate the two while maintaining max airflow for the outlets and the desired package space for the bin. I also designed a unique hinge stop feature to robustly stop the lid at the correct open angle.Catia V4Chrysler LX - Design, development and packaging of instrument panel Center stack bezel and push-push storage bin/ashtray. Developed the bezel with welded storage bin and features to attach outlets & clock. I designed the track & door for the push-push feature along with the bin that could contain the smokers package or the power outlet package. Chrysler minivan STOW & GO floor. The floor was designed to fold open and be used for storage or have the seats fold up and actuate into the bin to be covered by the floor. I designed a center covers that actuated with the seat movement as it was folded forward and moved inboard. The cover would act as the filler in the space between the center plate and the seats when the seats were out. When stored a post on the seat frame would actuate the cover to slide inboard under the center plate and a panel normally in the up position would flip down covering the opening where the seat frame and sliding plate had been. This process would reverse when the seat was folded out keeping the whole process automated.
