Growing up in a construction family; hard work was an expectation. What I didn't expect is that working hard would be one of the easiest parts of my journey thus far in my career. Teamwork, collaboration, relationships, and leadership, those are the ones that really require the heavy lifting. At an early age, I was always encouraged to work harder than everyone else around me. However, success in business is about relationships. Relationships you build with co-workers, with customers, with businesses and even your relationships at home. Don't get me wrong, I still work as hard or harder than those around me but that is no longer my sole focus. After graduating, I spent the first 5 years working on construction of underground pipelines. It was hard, physical work, 60-90 hrs/wk, working with new people in unfamiliar places. I was quickly able to work my way into a supervisory role and learned a lot about what it takes to manage and lead. It was a first taste of the importance of what relationships mean in the workplace.In 2012 I was hired as a biologist with the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries. I took over management of an outdoor ed. center and shooting range as well as a fledgling archery program. I had fewer employees, but a massive increase in responsibility. Budgets, procurement, performance reviews, contracts, training and all the other things that come with a job in state government. I worked hard, developed relationships, and was able to make substantial changes and improvements. I re-branded the archery program and grew it to over 200 schools, impacting more than 30,000 youth annually. I was able to improve a number of aspects of the Woodworth Shooting Range and increased users by three fold. I implemented new programs at the Woodworth Outdoor Ed Center including archery and fishing camps for youth and training programs for volunteers. In June of 2017 I accepted the position of Conservation Manager with the Union Sportsmen's Alliance. Tasked with building a conservation program from nearly the ground up. I developed hundreds of relationships with members, volunteers, government agencies, and corporate partners. I identified, coordinated, and executed more than 150 volunteer led conservation projects nationwide. Spoke at meetings and conferences, developed SOP's and systems to increase efficiency and focused time and energy on becoming a better manager and a better leader. In this position I saw first hand the importance of relationships, leadership, honesty and integrity.
