    Fridley, Minnesota, Us
Leading the creation of a platform for data extraction of protected health information (PHI) from hospital premises via de-identification/anonymization and transfer to the cloud for big data analytics. Set up the project proposal, requirements, system architecture, and de-identification algorithms. Lead a cross-functional team interfacing with a variety of departments (e.g., legal, global security office, data protection and privacy, regulatory affairs, and clinical affairs), quality, test, and dev ops teams as well as working through the statement of work with a third-party vendor with expertise in data privacy. Currently proposing the next stage which includes infrastructure enhancements so as capture of additional patient information such that the machine learning will be better able to segment the data for analysisCreated corporate-wide (world-wide) Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning group and grew it to over 300 participants. Gathered leaders from sales, marketing, development, and professional services to meet bi-monthly to cut-through organizational communication barriers. Communicates across global business units seeking ways to leverage the Vital Sync™ product, such as making it an AI/ML platform in the operating room.Work with the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards software working groups for medical device interoperability. Helped draft a Technical Information Report, TIR75, titled “Factors to Consider When Multi-Vendor Devices Interact Via an Electronic Interface.” Brought expertise and personal experiences from development of military tactical data links and joint service interoperability exercises during defense contracting years as well as experiences writing a variety of medical device interfaces during the development of Vital Sync™. In a second working group, “Black Box Data Logger,” again contributes device and system connectivity experience and debugging / logging for analysis.
  • Covidien (Medtronic Minimally Invasive Therapies Group)
    Principal Software Engineer
Covidien (Medtronic Minimally Invasive Therapies Group) May 2011 - Apr 2015
    Fridley, Minnesota, Us
Founding member, collaborative system architect, and core developer of the Vital Sync product and platform. The system takes data from bedside medical devices, in near-real-time, stores at central server, and makes available remotely to doctors, nurses, and other clinicians as well as programatically via web based REST APIs. Designed and implemented the protocol handling system, enabling plug-in of any device specific interface. He developed mechanisms for data caching, waveform management, and content reporting. He re-architected components as system growth exceeded original concepts. Combining data from multiple devices enables smarter clinical decision support systems; prototyped Modified Early Warning Score, and Spontaneous Breathing Trial systems. Took product from an idea to having over 100 hospital deployments. He has planned new ideas to reduce nuisance alarms and for earlier detection of deterioration.Developed interface specifications for communicating medical data with internal corporate partners as well as external companies. Architected, designed, and implemented the “HL7 results-in” capability for Vital Sync. This strategic component enables the system to truly be device agnostic and sell into any hospital regardless whether or not it has Medtronic branded medical devices. He has participated in multiple IHE Connect-a-thons for the standardization of medical device communications and has collaborated with IHE technical committee for waveform message protocols.Advanced R & D on clinical decision support systems to follow.
