Spoke to and worked closely with the Florida State CIO Association to build relationships and find internship and employment opportunities for FSU computer science students and graduates. Computer Science Department participated for the first time in Florida State Legislative Day with CIO Association to promote our department and students to Florida Legislators, State Department Heads and public. Identified 60 possible paid internship positions for computer science majors in 16+ state agencies and placed students in 5 state agencies in our pilot program.
  • Florida State University
    Department Chair
Florida State University Aug 2011 - Aug 2014
    Tallahassee, Fl, Us
Formulated and executed a strategic faculty hiring plan for long-term sustained growth of the department, with a focus on strengthening the department's research areas while ensuring broad curricular coverage. Hired five tenure-track Assistant Professors and two specialized Teaching Faculty. Four of the new faculty hires are from underrepresented groups (female). Two teaching faculty positions are supported by the $3M funding by the Board of Governors' TEAm grant. I am one of the principals on this funding grant. I started an internship program and a new training course for our CS majors for placement at several state agencies and local companies. I also added student career advising staff and two new staff positions for the system group in support of the growing system administration MS track. During this three year period, the department has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of Computer Science undergraduate majors, from 349 to 658. The number of MS and PhD students increased from 60 to 101 and 60 to 65, respectively. The total student enrollment in our programs reached an all time high in 2013. The enrollment increases can be contributed to a new social media advertising campaign that I started, revamping our 3+2 BS/MS program, and improving retention. I introduced a new departmental annual event, the CS Expo. This expo provides networking opportunities for students, alumni, employers, and faculty. I applied for ABET re-accreditation of our BS in CS program, which is re-approved. In preparation, I reformulated the department's mission statement and strengthened the degree program educational objectives and student outcomes. Finally, the department maintains a top 100 ranking in the US according to US News rankings of best colleges, positioning the department as the second highest ranked CS department in the state.
