Senior Manufacturing EngineerXalt Energy 2015 - PresentMidland, Michigan, UsResponsible for technology improvements to lithium ion battery production processes to improve quality and increase productivity. Roles include defining project scopes; project estimation and budget oversight; project management with design supervision and contractor management; safety activities including MOC reviews, and interaction with plant personnel.Managing projects in a high tech environment such as XALT Energy requires a good understanding of battery technology as well comprehensive knowledge of working in a high tech manufacturing environment. -
Senior Project EngineerVantage Specialty Chemicals 2012 - May 2015Deerfield, Illinois, UsResponsible for process expansions as well as building and utility upgrade projects in a chemical plant. Roles include project estimation and budget oversight; project management with design supervision and contractor management; safety activities including HAZOP reviews, and interaction with plant personnel.Management of projects in a chemical plant requires an understanding of chemistry and chemical engineering principles to effectively balance my Mechanical Engineering degree in the chemical industry. -
Senior Process Project Engineer And Technology LeaderDow Corning 2009 - 2012Midland, Michigan, UsResponsible for silicone resin technology center activities supporting 400 million dollars of annual business. Activities included: developing technology road maps; gaining support for capital projects, which included performing economic evaluations; facilitating cross-functional meetings; sponsoring Six Sigma DMAIC and DMEDI projects; and managing a multi-million dollar capital portfolio. Leader for process and product transfer to China while working with both Chinese engineers and engineers from Dow Corning's India engineering office. Project activities included defining the project needs; forming the project team which included electrical, mechanical, civil, and instrument engineers; detailed design requiring face to face and evening live meetings; participating in safety audits throughout design, and construction of project; conducting construction over- site; and start up activities with product qualification. -
Manufacturing Building Team LeaderDow Corning 2005 - 2008Midland, Michigan, UsResponsible for leading 12 operators and 5 professionals in a manufacturing building to produce antifoams, cosmetic, and non-cosmetic emulsions. Operation of the building consisted of: an 8.6 million dollar annual operating budget; eight batch processes, two fully automated; independent batch kettle clean-in-place system; independent sanitized water system; tanker and box trailer loading capabilities; product production to meet global demand. As team leader supervised the upgrade of one of Dow Corning’s key antifoam processes. The purpose of the project was to enable the Midland plant to manufacture a product produced in Europe. Since most of the sales were in the U.S. market, it was imperative to move production to the United States to reduce transportation costs, working capital, and to shorten the supply chain. The project to upgrade the antifoam process was time driven and required my experience in heat exchanger design, pipe sizing, and vessel design for completion on time and on budget. -
Manufacturing EngineerDow Corning 2001 - 2004Midland, Michigan, UsResponsible for cosmetic and non-cosmetic emulsion product and process optimizations. During this time I gained experience with different technologies for emulsion production, like emulsion polymerization, and mechanical emulsification. While in this role I worked closely with process operators on a daily basis. We collaborated to overcome quality and equipment issues. Emulsion quality can be impacted by a number of different variables. To understand which variable was creating the emulsion quality problem I needed to have a fundamental understanding of the operation of shear devices like; homogenizers and sonolators. It was a requirement to understand how heat plays a role in the quality of the emulsion, which motivated me to understand tempered heating systems and mixing nozzle operation. -
Process EngineerDow Corning 1996 - 2000Midland, Michigan, UsI was responsible for the healthcare resin technology center activities that supported a multimillion dollar annual business. Activities included: developing technology road maps, gaining support for capital projects which included performing economic evaluations, facilitating global cross-functional meetings, and managing a multi-million dollar capital portfolio. As a process engineer I was responsibilities included scale up activities in a cGMP environment as well as product and process transfer from France to the United States. Process transfer responsibility included traveling to France to understand the technology as well as being responsible for the installation and startup of the equipment on its arrival at Dow Corning’s Hemlock facility. Once the equipment was installed, I was responsible for training the operating staff in a one month time frame.I worked on projects to optimize silicone extrusion and batch mixer operations in a cGMP environment at Dow Corning's Hemlock plant. This included bringing new and novel technologies to the manufacturing of silicone tubing. -
Reliability EngineerDow Corning 1991 - 1995Midland, Michigan, UsI was responsible for the reliability of silicone resin batch and continuous processes that leveraged over 500 million dollars of annual sales. While working as a reliability engineer I was responsible for understanding: glass lined equipment repair, vacuum pump operation, agitator mechanical seal design and mixing dynamics, centrifugal and positive pump operation and repair, lined piping, both Teflon and Kynar, and distillation column operation in an acidic environment. As a reliability engineer I also was the representative on Dow Corning's ball valve committee which oversaw the selection of a key supplier and resolution of quality issues with ball valves. -
Mechanical Design EngineerDow Corning 1986 - 1990Midland, Michigan, UsAs the lead mechanical engineer I participated in the design upgrades of continuous chemical processes in Dow Corning's Kentucky plant. My involvement included specification writing and design of multiple compressor systems.I was the project leader for the installation of a batch kettle in Dow Corning's Kentucky plant. Project activities included forming the project team which included: electrical, mechanical, civil, and instrument engineers; detailed design requiring face to face meetings; participating in safety audits throughout design, and construction of project; and conducting construction over- site.I was the project leader for a large storage tank project to handle hazardous waste in Dow Corning's Midland plant. The complexity of the hazardous waste required me to understand the dynamics of solids suspended in a liquid. With this understanding I was able to specify the tank, piping, pump design to transport and store the hazardous waste safely. I was the project leader for several small capital projects to improve processes in Dow Corning's Midland plant.
