Profile bio

About Robert Wild

I'm an experimental physicist with extensive experience in optics, laser and RF spectroscopy, and cold-atom and ion-trapping experiments. During my PhD studies, I researched the dynamics and correlations of a Bose-Einstein Condensate, using ultracold atoms to probe the quantum mechanics underlying superfluidity. After that I ventured into the environmental sciences and built a laser-based instrument to measure trace gases in the atmosphere. My current interests focus on understanding the processes occurring in the interstellar medium, performing measurements on trapped cold molecular ions. Robert Wild work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Innsbruck, Austria

I cool and trap molecular ions of astrophysical relevance in a multipole radiofrequency trap. By performing spectroscopy as well as reaction rate measurements on various species, I hope to gain an understanding of the chemical and physical processes that drive the chemical evolution of molecular clouds in the interstellar medium.

Jun 2017 - Sep 2022

Analog Astronaut

Current

Innsbruck

I was selected, trained, and certified in 2019 to be in the analog astronaut corps of the ÖWF. I was crew member of the four week AMADEE20 mission in the Negev Desert, performing experiments related to planetary exploration during a simulated Mars mission: https://oewf.org/en/amadee-20/

Jan 2019 - Present

Post-Doctoral Researcher

Boulder, Colorado

I constructed a cavity ring-down system that measures NO, NO2, O3, and total reactive nitrogen (NOy) in the atmosphere with a detection limit of a few parts per trillion. I have deployed with this instrument in several field campaigns around the country to study various sources of air pollution.

Oct 2012 - Aug 2015

Research Assistant

Boulder, Colorado

I worked on a cold atom experiment, using various laser and radio frequency spectroscopic techniques to study the dynamics and correlations of strongly interacting Bose-Einstein Condensates.

Aug 2004 - Dec 2011

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Tucson, Arizona

I studied and modeled near-field matter-wave interference on an atomic beam apparatus.
