I graduated from Penn State Behrend in the summer of 2012 after completing an internship at GE Transportation in Erie, PA. While I was interning, I discovered an internal leadership program called GE’s Manufacturing Apprentice Program. After I was accepted, I went through a 6-month manufacturing training course through Erie Institute of Technology where I learned and operated Mills, Lathes, CNC’s, pneumatics, hydraulics, and PLC’s. This was just a basis of which I would use for the next 7 years of my manufacturing career. Beyond the machining skills, I learned the supply chain processes. I learned about material handling, quality of product, production line processes and how to be an effective leader. I worked with a team from Bangladesh, India on electrical engineering with wires and harness routing. I also had the opportunity to gain experience with HR management and union relationships.Here are some of the more quantitative accomplishments that I am most proud of.• Reduced the number of escaped defects to our customers by more than 50% year over year.• 100% export orders shipped on time for 6 quarters in a row.• 0 discrepancies on yearly inventory checks, 2 years in a row.• Reducing the amount paperwork by going digital in inspection and test records while reducing time off product by 10%.What am I looking for in my employer?I want to be challenged with value added work and responsibilities. I want to know that what I am doing, I can see the value added at the end of the line and what I do directly affects the customer. I want to be able to work with a team or a group of individuals with different ideas and experiences and create something incredible, whether it’s a new process, product, or culture. I want my employer to be a company devoted to growing larger, while still being involved with the community and region around them. Lastly, I want a company to encourage internal growth and involvement at an individual level.
