We all bear witness to the inequality and injustice that plague our world. I believe there is hope for a brighter future. My life’s endeavor is to create a more equitable workplace and society. I’m an author, researcher, and consultant on the science underlying bias and racism in organizations. I have spent over 20 years conducting research on racial bias and its multiple causes, consequences, and solutions. I have worked as a professor at leading universities around the world. My research has been published in top-tier academic journals and showcased in popular press outlets, such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Newsweek, Time, CNN, and MSNBC. Nine years ago, I decided to shift my focus from academic research to organizational practice. I accepted an academic-practitioner position at Harvard University where I teach leaders in the public and private sectors how to lead more inclusive organizations. I also serve as a consultant for external organizations, having worked with scores of Fortune 500 companies, public-sector agencies, and non-profit organizations. My article “How to Promote Racial Equity in the Workplace” was the winner of the 2020 Warren Bennis Prize, awarded to the best leadership article published in Harvard Business Review each year, and selected as part of "HBR at 100", a 2022 book showcasing the most innovative and influential articles published in HBR over the last century.In 2021, Penguin Random House published my book: The Conversation: How Seeking and Speaking the Truth About Racism Can Radically Transform Individuals and Organizations. It is a tool for individuals and organizations interested in learning what they can do to combat racism in organizations and society. It was named a Financial Times Best Book of 2021 and was a nominee for a 2022 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Achievement in the Instructional category.In 2022, I started my newsletter, UpCurrent, in which I further my efforts to seek and speak the truth about racism to inform and inspire others to do the same. It is a science-based, non-partisan platform where the capital-C Conversation occurs in a civil forum.
